Have you heard about the arraignment against Officer  Peter Liang of the NYPD?   80-20 has received many emails  from Asian Ams pleading for us to look into this matter.     After a Board meeting, 80-2O Initiative takes the  following positions:  1) It shall not let Officer Peter Liang be the victim of political      scapegoating, if indeed we conclude this is the case, after      our thorough fact-finding.  2) It advises Asian Ams. not to join or participate in petitions      and movements that only expose our community's political      ignorance/immaturity which makes us even weaker.   Take      the recent White House petitions as examples.  The      initiators and signers are great people who yearned for      justice.  80-20 thanks them and shares their goal.  However,      those petitions ignore the legal environment in the USA.       Keep in mind that the President of the U.S. has no legal      authority over an indictment in Brooklyn. Nor is Pres.      Obama likely to make a statement on an ongoing legal case.       In America, we need to practice politics the American way.       Remember the Jimmy Kimmel "kill every Chinese"      episode? 80-20 got the first and ONLY written apology from       ABC soon after the event.  Weeks after a White House       petition, which asked Pres.Obama to interfere, had reached       100,000 signers, and long after the matter has been       satisfactorily resolved, there was a White House statement       on this matter. Did anyone remember what was said?        (Please note that this was not a reflection on the White       House, but a reflection on the silliness of that petition.  Pres.       Obama is not the equivalent of a Chinese Emperor.  He has       no authority over ABC, a private enterprise.)      "Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to        repeat it"   -    George Santayana.       However, if there were a petition to 80-20 to help Office       Liang and it quickly gathers 100,000 signatures, it would be        much more effective.  Why?   Because 80-20 would be        greatly empowered by the apparent yearning for its        leadership, thereby enabling it to do even more.  3)  80-20'll strive to create a win-win situation to ensure justice      for Officer Liang. This part of 80-20's effort requires tactical       maneuver in the future.  Hence, we'll only summarize the       essence.  The indictment of Officer Liang could be partially       politically motivated. Get Ready for the 2016 Presidential Election

                      A Golden Opportunity For Us

   Every presidential//gubernatorial election is a golden 

opportunity for Asian Ams.  The candidates crave our bloc vote.  

We YEARN to win advancements toward equal opportunity which 

the victors can provide.   A win-win situation beckons, but only if 

we are smart and ready.

   Remember the 2008/2012 elections?  80-20 supported Sen. 

Obama with bloc votes of 62/35 in 2008 & 73/26 in 2012 , according 

to NYTimes exit polls.  In return, Obama appointed 3 AsAm cabinet 

members, tripled the number of life-tenured AsAm federal judges, 

and helped lift the glass ceiling somewhat in private industries, 

universities and governments.

    

             To Seize the Opportunity in 2016, Get Ready.   
                               That includes YOU!

             

    The 2016 presidential election season has begun. Hilary Clinton 

(D), Jeb Bush (R) and many other presidential candidates will 
probably declare any days now.   

           A Respectful Request to Asian Am 
                        Elected Officials

    Chances are, Clinton, Bush and other candidates have
already sent feelers to some AsAm elected officers seeking 
their endorsement.   Therefore, 

  

    (1) TO all AsAm elected officials: We'd love to support you.  
We are aware that you face pressures that outsiders are not aware 
of.  However, please do NOT sign up with any presidential 
candidate until you've are aware of the candidate's positions on:

      a) college admissions policy and

      b) giving AsAms equal opportunity to rise to the top in private 

          industries, universities, and governments.

    Don't sell our community short!   Ensure that the positions of the 

candidate you are about to endorse don't contradict against the 

consensus of our community. Our community is getting politically 

organized. Note how we have pointedly defeated two elected AsAm 

officials who betrayed us in the Stop SCA 5 movement in California.  

     (2) TO all the rest of us: Please forward this email to the 
elected AsAm officials in your election district.   We need to make 
the presidential candidates aware of our specific concerns through 
YOU, 80-20 and AsAm elected officials.  Together, we shall 
overcome.

Good news on the 1st day of the Lunar New Year

Possibly Achieving Equal Opportunity 2 Yrs Earlier!                                                                           The Good News                                     Please enjoy this message from Mr. Ed Blum, shown below.         "Prof. Woo,          Harvard did not move to dismiss; instead they answered our           complaint. This is incredible---we have breached the walls.           This will cut 2 years off of the litigation.   . . (emphasis added)                                                                         Edward Blum"      To me, cutting 2 years off of the litigation could mean that our  college students may enjoy their equal opportunity in entering the  best of the US colleges two years earlier!                                                                                   Edward Blum       Ed. Blum is the person who brought the "Fisher vs. Univ. of Texas" which resulted in a Supreme Court ruling that US courts  must apply "strict scrutiny".  That is, in deciding whether a  universities may be permitted to apply"race preference" admissions,  the courts must take a harder look if other alternatives are available  to achieve diversity.        The above gain in legal ruling then led to a law suit from "Students For Fair Admissions,"  against Harvard and U. of N. Carolina, against  supported by Ed Blum.  Those 2 universities seemed to be the most  vulnerable  to charges of having violated the "strict scrutiny" standard.           The early legal consensus was that Harvard would likely buy time  by moving to "dismiss" the law suit in the District Court level and win  the judgment.  This will then be appealed to the Circuit Court and  eventually to the Supreme Court. The Supreme Court will likely reverse  the ruling of the lower courts and find for "Students For Fair Admissions"  -- 2 years of litigation.   After that, the law suit against Harvard will  FINALLY be argued at the District Court level, as it has actually already  happened today.                   Who Are Fighting   for the Equal Opportunity of                                  AsAm College Applicants?            Ed Blum, his financial backers and his lawyers are fighting at the  forefront!       Who are fighting in the AsAm community?  Who else but 80-20, as  the only AsAm national organization.   Most other national AsAm orgs  are on the other side!  What a shame!         What are our rich individuals doing for our children?   Worse than  nothing!   We only know of those who have donated tens of millions to  Harvard to get their names on a building and newspapers!  Not a single  one has given even one million to help Ed Blum or 80-20 fight the  discrimination against us.   What a shame!                        Step by Step We Will Strengthen Ourselves!      80-20 has tried tirelessly for 16 years to help strengthen the AsAm  community.  HELP us continue our trajectory!                                              Donating to SELF till it hurts. Lunar New Year, SCR 10, Let Buyers Beware

Lunar New Year,  SCR 10, Let Buyers Bewar                                                                                                    

Thanking Republican Sen. Bob Huff,  Minority Leader,  CA Senate Senator Huff is apparently leading a concerted effort to court  AsAm voters in California.  He supported the STOP SCA 5  (Senate Constitutional Amendment 5) movement, aiming to  stop Democratic initiative to return "race-preference" college  admissions to CA.   He also sponsored SCR 10 (Senate  Concurrent Resolution 10) on 2/9/2015, and SJR 23  (Senate Joint Resolution 23) in 2014.  What do these  resolutions do?     SCR 10 "recognizes the Lunar New Year Celebration."      SJR 23 "acknowledges the history of the Chinese in  California, ... and would request Congress to adopt resolutions  of apology to the Chinese American community for the  enactment of the Chinese exclusion laws." [In comparison,  H. resolution 683 passed by the Congress in 2012,  sponsored by Rept. Judy Chu expressed regret only.]              Let Buyers Beware!           It is good to have a major political party courting for our  votes in CA.  However, we shouldn't give away our votes  cheaply.  80-20 Initiative aims to help educate AsAm voters and to prod the 2 political parties to compete to earn our vote,  with substantive deeds rather than "sweet words signifying  nothing."     Know the distinction between Resolutions and Bills   Resolutions are words, not laws.  H. Resolution 683, SJR 23  and SCR 10 are all resolutions.  Very often resolutions are  used by politicians as cheap ways to win votes from the  "uneducated voters", because passing resolutions are very  easy to do, owing to 3 reasons: 1) it is not a law but just sweet words, 2) it doesn't require the appropriation of money nor the setting      of penalties for anyone who violates a resolution.  In      contrast, a law must set a penalty for people who violate      the law, 3) politicians customarily pass each other's resolutions.  As a      former President of Delaware Senate, I know.     Bills, if passed, become laws.  Passing a bill is normally  hundreds of times harder.     To illustrate the nature of resolutions:  After the passage of  SJR 23, did the US Congress issue an apology? NO!  Did  the Congress even bother to react to SJR 23?          To illustrate the nature of 80-20's work:  In 2008, 80-20  induced Sen. Obama to agree to appoint more AsAm federal  lawyers.  The result?     A Role model for Asian American Youth

   Acacia Dai, a high school student in Virginia, donated $500 to
SELF.  She wasan intern whom 80-20 engaged for some website 
work last summer.   She is proud of her ethnic origin, and will 
insist on and fight for her rights to be given equal opportunity to 
enter all colleges. 

   Upon graduation, she will insist on and fight for equal 
opportunity to rise to the top.  Tell your children and grandchildren 
about Acacia Dai.  They need role models.

   Of course, the most natural role model for your children and 
grandchildren is you!

  The Board of Donors (BOD) Is Very Active

     Here are the highlights about its activities:

1) The Board members, elected by all donors, are:

    Ved Chaudhary,  Zhi-Long Chen, Larry Yu-Chi HO, Fan Jiao, Max 

    Kiang, Tony Li, Manlan Liu, Yiming Lou, Andrew Mak , Yuko 

    Nakanishi, William Pak,  Kathleen To, HP Wang, Mark Xu, and 

    Jing-Li Yu 

2)  BOD has verified that the SELF fund exists; not a penny has 
     been spent; & is therefore capable of refunding all donors in 
     full, if SELF fails to reach $1 million/year for 5 years.

3) In a conference call on Jan.15, 2015,  BOD members agreed to 
    try to raise, each day, $200/yr for 5 years between now and Feb. 
    15.  Prof. Larry Yu-Chi Ho, who proposed the idea, followed 
    up by sending in a $10,000 check to SELF.

4) Fan Jiao and Dr. Yuko Nakanishi were elected president and
    Vice President of BOD respectively.

      Our clock is ticking.  Each of Us Needs to 
    Help find wealthy AsAm individuals to either bid for the naming 
     right for SELF at a minimum bidding price of $1 million, or find 3 
     donors to each match an existing $250,000 donation, by Oct. 25.  
     If SELF fails, all donations will be returned in full.
