Our Only Interest : JUSTICE for Officer Peter Liang

Indictment Against Peter Liang Politically Motivated?
Some made the above charge.  80-20 is not ready to believe it yet.  However, 80-20 must be ready to act, when called for.  In the event that politics is interfering against justice, 80-20 shall play a counter-balancing role.

So we looked into politics in Brooklyn and the track record of District Attorney (DA) Kenneth Thompson.

                  The Demographics of Brooklyn

The demographics, shown in the table below, project a rapidly rising political role for Asian Ams in Brooklyn elections.

Racial composition
2010
1990
19501900
 49.5% 46.9% 92.2%98.3%
-Non-Hispanic 35.8% 40.1% n/an/a
 35.8% 37.9%  7.6%1.6%
Hispanic or Latino (of any race)
 19.8% 20.1%  n/an/a
 11.3%  4.8%0.1%
0.1%

From 1990 to 2010, the population of non-Hispanic Whites, blacks and Hispanics  all decreased.  In contrast, that of Asian increased by 135%, or approximately 5% per year.

By Spring of 2017, when the next Democratic primary for Brooklyn DA will occur, the Asian population will be about 16%.  A primary in which one constituent has an emotional grudge is where a PAC like 80-20 can play a pivotal role.

The Track Record of DA Ken Thompson

DA Thompson was elected in 2013 after a very bitter election against a 6-term  former  Brooklyn DA Charles Hynes. Thompson was sworn in as DA on 1/1/2014.  He seems to be doing a respectable job.  Being a public servant in a city like Brooklyn is not easy.  80-20 wishes him luck.

However, in 1.2 years, DA Thompson has generated much negative publicity.
See some Newspaper headlines about him below:

DA's detective driver is former drug dealer | New York Post - Oct 29, 2014, and Brooklyn DA treats detectives like personal errand boys - only 4 days ago. One quote in the above article says, ""He's a psychopath," the source said. "There is no DA I know of in the state who has his own advance team."

Shopping for a DA Candidate for the 2017 Election?

No, no, no!  80-20 will focus its effort on fact finding* to advance justice.  Politics should never interfere with justice.

Let the word go forth that if 80-20 must use politics to counter-balance politically           motivated scapegoating against Officer Peter Liang of NYPD, we will!

Facts that 80-20 is very interested in verifying:
 i) Were Liang and his partner explicitly ordered not to do vertical patrolling in that building by their boss?
ii) Had Liang admitted that his finger was on the trigger?  Or, did he state that his finger was along the
gun barrel but slipped when his right shoulder hit a door?
iii) Is there any physical evidence that the bullet hit the wall and ricocheted?  Has the physical evidence
    been protected and/or photographed?
iv) Did Liang and his partner call the Police Union first and 4 minutes later call 911?
 v) Some articles describe the stairwell as being "pitch black."  Is it true?  The jury could easily be
convinced that Officer Liang would feel threatened in this dangerous public housing project area
where the stairwell is pitch black. Would it then have been reasonable for him to keep the finger
     on the trigger?
vi) What other police shooting or assault cases has the Brooklyn DA prosecuted recently?
vII) What role did Liang's partner play in this incident?  Is he under investigation or being disciplined?

Position on Officer Peter Liang's arraignment

Have you heard about the arraignment against Officer
Peter Liang of the NYPD?   80-20 has received many emails
from Asian Ams pleading for us to look into this matter.

After a Board meeting, 80-2O Initiative takes the
following positions:

1) It shall not let Officer Peter Liang be the victim of political
scapegoating, if indeed we conclude this is the case, after
    our thorough fact-finding.

2) It advises Asian Ams. not to join or participate in petitions
and movements that only expose our community's political
ignorance/immaturity which makes us even weaker.   Take
the recent White House petitions as examples.  The
initiators and signers are great people who yearned for
justice.  80-20 thanks them and shares their goal.  However,
those petitions ignore the legal environment in the USA.
Keep in mind that the President of the U.S. has no legal
authority over an indictment in Brooklyn. Nor is Pres.
Obama likely to make a statement on an ongoing legal case.
In America, we need to practice politics the American way.

Remember the Jimmy Kimmel "kill every Chinese"
episode? 80-20 got the first and ONLY written apology from
ABC soon after the event.  Weeks after a White House
petition, which asked Pres.Obama to interfere, had reached
100,000 signers, and long after the matter has been
satisfactorily resolved, there was a White House statement
on this matter. Did anyone remember what was said?
(Please note that this was not a reflection on the White
House, but a reflection on the silliness of that petition.  Pres.
Obama is not the equivalent of a Chinese Emperor.  He has
no authority over ABC, a private enterprise.)

"Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to
      repeat it"   -    George Santayana.

However, if there were a petition to 80-20 to help Office
Liang and it quickly gathers 100,000 signatures, it would be
much more effective.  Why?   Because 80-20 would be
greatly empowered by the apparent yearning for its
leadership, thereby enabling it to do even more.

3)  80-20'll strive to create a win-win situation to ensure justice
for Officer Liang. This part of 80-20's effort requires tactical
maneuver in the future.  Hence, we'll only summarize the
essence.  The indictment of Officer Liang could be partially
politically motivated. Hence 80-20 will act with politics in
mind as well, while stressing fact finding.  Our aim is to
create a win-win situation for District Attorney Thompson of
Brooklyn, the African American community, and Officer
     Peter Liang, while upholding justice!

4) 80-20 will be doing much fact findings and fact checkings in
mattersshown below my name .   I encourage all to
    volunteer your effort to help.

Get Ready for the 2016 Presidential Election

                      A Golden Opportunity For Us

Every presidential//gubernatorial election is a golden
opportunity for Asian Ams.  The candidates crave our bloc vote.
We YEARN to win advancements toward equal opportunity which
the victors can provide.   A win-win situation beckons, but only if
we are smart and ready.

Remember the 2008/2012 elections?  80-20 supported Sen.
to NYTimes exit polls.  In return, Obama appointed 3 AsAm cabinet
memberstripled the number of life-tenured AsAm federal judges,
and helped lift the glass ceiling somewhat in private industries,
universities and governments.

To Seize the Opportunity in 2016, Get Ready.
                               That includes YOU!

The 2016 presidential election season has begun. Hilary Clinton
(D), Jeb Bush (R) and many other presidential candidates will
probably declare any days now.

A Respectful Request to Asian Am
                        Elected Officials

Chances are, Clinton, Bush and other candidates have
already sent feelers to some AsAm elected officers seeking
their endorsement.   Therefore,

    (1) TO all AsAm elected officials: We'd love to support you.
We are aware that you face pressures that outsiders are not aware
of.  However, please do NOT sign up with any presidential
candidate until you've are aware of the candidate's positions on:
      a) college admissions policy and
      b) giving AsAms equal opportunity to rise to the top in private
          industries, universities, and governments.

Don't sell our community short!   Ensure that the positions of the
candidate you are about to endorse don't contradict against the
consensus of our community. Our community is getting politically
organizedNote how we have pointedly defeated two elected AsAm
officials who betrayed us in the Stop SCA 5 movement in California.

     (2) TO all the rest of usPlease forward this email to the
elected AsAm officials in your election district.   We need to make
the presidential candidates aware of our specific concerns through
YOU, 80-20 and AsAm elected officials.  Together, we shall
overcome.

Step by Step We Will Strengthen Ourselves!

WANT SERVICE?  Pay for it, although I and many others
worked for YOU free for the last 16 years

                                     The Good News

Please enjoy this message from Mr. Ed Blum, shown below.

     "Prof. Woo,

Harvard did not move to dismiss; instead they answered our
complaint. This is incredible---we have breached the walls
This will cut 2 years off of the litigation.   . . (emphasis added)

                                                                        Edward Blum"
To me, cutting 2 years off of the litigation could mean that our
college students may enjoy their equal opportunity in entering the
best of the US colleges two years earlier!

                                         Edward Blum
Ed. Blum is the person who brought the "Fisher vs. Univ. of
Texas" which resulted in a Supreme Court ruling that US courts
must apply "strict scrutiny".  That is, in deciding whether a
universities may be permitted to apply"race preference" admissions,
the courts must take a harder look if other alternatives are available
to achieve diversity.
