Biggest Battle for Eq.Oppor.Coming Soon

Historic Background (I): Systemic Discrimination Against AsAms

AsAm adults suffer the lowest glass ceiling in workplaces, while AsAm youths suffer the highest barrier in college admissions. To see an example of 80-20's battles against such systemic discrimination, see a full-page ad. in Washington Post placed by 80-20 on December 6, 2006.

Historic Background (II): Our battles to Protect
our Children's Equal Opportunity to Education

The AsAm community is financially well to do. We have more people, per thousand in population, with bachelor's and higher degrees than any other races. However, unlike the Jewish community we do NOT have non-government organizations with sufficient human and financial resources to fight against blatant systemic discrimination against our children.

As a result, 80-20 courted Ed Blum who has the legal expertise and millions of dollars to fight this battle for us and with us*. He has mounted lawsuits against Harvard, University of North Carolina and a few others.

From day one, we knew we would lose the court cases at the District Courts and Appeals Courts. However, we have the strategic patience
to know that "He who laughs last, laughs best." After years of toiling, the lawsuits have finally crept to the Supreme Court level, where we hope for a
very different ruling.

The Biggest Battle for Eq. Opportunity of our Children Coming Soon!

Please read a NY Times article published 5 days ago. Its title is: "The Supreme Court Tactic That Aims to Kill Affirmative Action". Its subtitle is: "A group suing Harvard and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill has asked the court to hear the two cases together, hoping for a ruling that would apply across education." The word "across" means that the Supreme Court ruling would apply to BOTH private and public universities.

That NYT's title exhibits a part of the hidden systemic discrimination against AsAms. The aim of our lawsuits is to stop discrimination against AsAm applicants, not to kill Affirmative Action, AA, whether AA is involved in the legal examination or not.

Do you need reminding how discriminatory Harvard is against our children? Recall that Harvard's "holistic" evaluation of applicants includes a "personality rating". Ed Blum's lawsuits brought out the shocking fact that the average personality rating of AsAm applicants is significantly lower than that of applicants of all other races. That is how Harvard camouflaged a barrier to limit the number of its AsAm students, just like it did against the Jewish students years ago. Wow! It adds insult to injury!

Take a stand to protect our children's equal opportunity to education! Support 80-20. Check your memory. Do you know of any other big AsAm orgs. which support the lawsuits against Harvard and U. of N. Carolina**????

*80-20 has worked with Ed Blum long before Students For Fair   Admissions  was established by Ed Blum. SFFA is the plaintiff in those
lawsuits. 80-20  donates $10,000 to SFFA every year for many years.  We also provide strong moral support for Ed Blum.

**Actually there are a couple of other good orgs. They just may not have as
big an email list as that of 80-20. We value their partnership in battles. Note,   however, almost every big AsAm org., except for 80-20, adheres to the   partisan views of the Democratic Party and does not support the lawsuits.   80-20 is truly non-partisan and looks after the rightful interests of AsAms.

Michelle Wu Got Nat'l Spot Light

President Joe Biden Spotlights Michelle WU

Two days ago, President Joe Biden sent this email to his "team":
"Team --

The results in Virginia this week were a wake up call for our party. ....
if we want to continue building back better, we have our work cut out for us.

Despite the outcome in Virginia, there is still plenty of reason to hope. .... Democrats also secured historic victories nationwide. Governor Phil Murphy became the first Democrat in nearly 45 years to win a second term in New Jersey. Michelle Wu will be the first woman, person of color, and Asian American to be elected mayor of Boston. ... The list goes on... " (emphasis added)

The above means Pres. Joe Biden counts Michelle Wu as "reason to hope." We can count that as another building block in our self-empowerment program.

For AsAm youths, who want to be involved in America's political process, read Boston Globe's article of yesterday: "Before Michelle Wu’s historic victory, she spent years community-building". Take that to heart! Don't copy from someone who ran for high offices, without the necessary political groundwork & experience.

An Open and Friendly Caution to Michelle Wu

Dear Michelle:

Politics is consuming. I was there. May I share with you a consuming temptation that I have encountered? Selfish flatterers, usually big donors and/or staffs, will soon ask you to plan for your next political move. Don't! A premature political move may ruin your career. Plant your feet firmly in Boston and serve your constituents well for at least 8 years.

Don't forget where you come from. Asian Americans don't have equal opportunity yet.

Your presumptuous and self-assumed uncle,
S. B. Woo

Wu Won Big; 80-20 Invites Volunteers

To put this e-newsletter on WeChat, you need: https://conta.cc/3byyFAa

Michelle Wu Won by 64.2% to 35.8%!

80-20 has proved with the accuracy of its prediction on Wu's victory and the margin of her victory, that 80-20 knows election politics.

2.5 months ago, our e-newsletter entitled Help a Good AsAm Candidate Win, introduced Michelle to you. At the time, she was largely unknown outside of Boston and MA. She was only leading her closest primary opponent by 23.4% to 21.6% in polls, while 22 % of her voters were still undecided. Look where she is today. She won by close to 30 points.

     80-20's 08/16/21 e-newsletter also said:

"80-20 will only recommend an AsAm candidate to you, if we've studied and mostly approved of the candidate's
          a) political career and activities,
          b) his/her chance of winning the particular campaign, and
          c) his/her personal & political value system.

We are proud to strongly recommend to you Michelle Wu ....."

THANK YOU for following 80-20's urging to donate to & volunteer for Wu's campaign. CONGRATULATIONS, MICHELLE! Serve Boston well!

What Is 80-20's REAL GOAL In The Above Prediction Exercise?

REAL GOAL: To forge a politically more cohesive AsAm community in the support of worthy AsAm political candidates. Help them win! Through that process, we EMPOWER ourselves!

In 80-20's view, there are 3 types of AsAm candidates:

1] Great candidates who are good for their constituents and the AsAm community, and who will likely win. 80-20 will rally all out support for them.

2] Strong candidates who may win or lose and yet have a bright political future even after a defeat. 80-20 will help root for & coach them (if welcome), provided they also identify with AsAms' best interests.

3] Unworthy candidates with no chance of winning and/or candidates who ruthlessly use our community's political immaturity as a stepping stone for personal gain. 80-20 will be stone-silent towards such candidates.

80-20 will NOT rate the hundreds of minor local candidates. We don't have enough resources.

FROM HERE ON, please look for 80-20's recommendation on AsAm
candidates running for high offices. When we help the right candidates, we EMPOWER ourselves. When we are stone-silent, shy away from such candidates.

Have Time For a Volunteer Job That Pays?

If you have the most basic spreadsheet skill and can type, 80-20 is looking for volunteers to help harvest email addresses. We'll pay $0.4 per valid AsAm e-address. Please email Lily Ren, my Special Assistant, (lily.ren@80-20ef.org). The job may fit housewives the best. Thank you.

Patching a Huge Hole in Our Pol. Maturity

To put this e-newsletter on WeChat, you need: https://conta.cc/3lHFc1q

- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

Q: Why are we so impotent in politics?
A: Many reasons. However, if we can learn from the Jewish community and
invest correctly in politics, we can change it very quickly.

Q: How do the Jewish invest in politics?
A: They invest in NGOs (non-governmental organizations) to handle political       issues that are peculiar to Jewish Americans. Examples are (1) AIPAC,        American Israel Public Affairs Comm., whose annual budget is $69.3M,
and (2) Anti-Defamation League ($70.8M). These NGOs are feared by        elected politicians. They are the fountains of the Jewish community's        political clout.

Q: Incredible! I'm from Asia. In Asia NGOs have no political clout.
A: We are in America now, stupid. In Asia, if an NGO fights with a politician,      the NGO loses. But in America, the opposite happens - the politicians are      scared of these Jewish NGOs.

Q: Ridiculous! How could it be?
A: Let me explain. In America, when a politician is facing re-election, he/she
is running the gauntlet. Any politician, who has powerful enemies, could      get beat.

Click here to verify the following quote from Wikipedia on AIPAC (Go to      "History," 4th paragraph). READ IT CAREFULLY for you to comprehend the       impact of AIPAC on American politics:
"AIPAC scored two major victories in the early 1980s that established its       image among political candidates as an organization "not to be trifled       with" and set the pace for "a staunchly pro-Israel" Congress over the        next three decades"!!! (emphasis added) THINK & INTERNALIZE
      THE ABOVE INFO.
Q: Unbelievable! Could the politicians hit back at the NGO's?
A: Very difficult for 2 reasons. First, the rule of law protects all NGOs which
are not violating laws. Secondly, the heads of NGOs are elected by NGO      members, not outside people. The battles between NGOs & politicians      are completely one-sided - in favor of NGOs.

Q: Is 80-20 an NGO?
A: Yes. 80-20 is an NGO with a "political Action Comm." to help elect or
defeat political candidates, just like AIPAC*. Remember that we are in
America now. Many things are so different from Asia. To live well, we need      to change to "When in Rome, do as the Romans do."
Q: Does 80-20 know how to get political candidates to beware that it is
    "not to be trifled with"?
A: Not all NGOs know politics. But 80-20 does. Here are examples of how
80-20 punished AsAm politicians who worked against EQUAL OPPOR-
TUNITY in college admissions in CA for AsAm youngsters.

In 2012, 80-20 led from afar to defeat CA Senate Constitutional Amend-
ment No. 5 (SCA-5). During the fight, 2 AsAm politicians were particularly
obstructive - State Senator Leland Yee and Assemblyman Paul Fong.       Consequently, one day after SCA-5 was defeated, 80-20 publicly declared       to drive both out of politics. They were both out of politics within one year.

Q: So what may we conclude?
A: If we want the Jewish community's political clout, then donate like the
Jewish! INVEST in AsAm NGOs which know American politics.

     80-20's annual budget is $0.2 M., while that of AIPAC's is $69.3 M. Wow!

Added News: Prof. Anming Hu's former university, UT, has offered to hire him                         back. Hence it is "mission accomplished". However, he still
has a few other problems which 80-20 is still helping.

* 80-20 differs from AIPAC in 1 big way: Thus far, 80-20 chooses not to get involved in US foreign policy, although it is legally permitted to do so.

Update: Michelle Wu for Mayor of Boston

The Acting Mayor of Boston, Kim Janey, who was formerly Michelle's strongest primary opponent, had endorsed Michelle early. A week ago, Congresswoman Ayanna Pressley endorsed Michelle Wu. Pressley is often considered the most influential politician in the black community in Boston. 5 days ago, U.S. Sen. Ed Markey endorsed Michelle Wu. Hence, both U.S. senators of MA have endorsed Wu. It is rather unusual for Congressional delegates to get involved in a mayoral race!

80-20 continues to confidently predict, as we did 3 weeks ago, that Michelle Wu will win by at least 55% on Nov. 2. To donate (we suggest $80.20 or $802.0), click here. To volunteer, click here2. Today, I sent Michelle another $80.20 in addition to the earlier $802.0 and $80.20. Let's help her win by a 2 to 1 ratio.

SMART Donations Bring Good RESULTS

80-20 endorsed Michelle Wu & predicted her victory to illustrate the above. If Michelle loses on November 2, you can bring me to task. :-). In paragraphs below, we use the "push-pull" technique to again remind you that "smart donations bring winning results".

     (1) By predicting Michelle's victory before the election is run, we aim to demonstrate to you that 80-20 understands elections deeply. Our purpose? To protect you from wasting your money supporting hopeless election campaigns run by ill-prepared & perhaps even callous AsAm candidates in the future. 80-20 estimated that several millions of precious AsAm dollars were wasted recently - money that could be used to transform 80-20 EF from a boutique org. to a formidable political institution, and

     (2) We also aim to gently warn an AsAm politician, who ran for very high offices without any prior political experience; raised millions from our community by exploiting the political immaturity of many AsAms, and lost miserably in primary elections. 80-20 is not against that person. We want him to study politics for a few years before entering the political arena again. However, this person is now raising money AGAIN to organize the "biggest AsAm PAC" and/or a "3rd political party" with himself as the head. What is his qualification with such losing records? What an insatiable ego. What a spoiled child. AsAms spoiled him with our unreasoned support & generous donations. We need to up our political maturity.
