Reaction to "U.A. Flight 3411" E-newsletter

How AsAms React to the U.A. Episode

Reaction To Our Joint 80-20 EF & 80-20 PAC Announcement
{A} The Joint Announcement
If indeed 3 out of the 4 randomly rejected passengers on United Airlines (U.A.) flight 3411 were Asians, as rumored in Asian social media, then this could be a very serious racial discrimination case as well.  Note that a Chicago-Louisville flight is unlikely to have many Asians on board.
However, repeated contacts with U.A. have thus far failed to receive a confirmation or denial on that point.  80-20 Initiative, composed of both PAC and EF, will be vigilant, and is keeping a very intense watch over the situation.
Setting race aside, we as citizens were outraged by how U.A. allowed police to drag a senior citizen with a proper ticket down the aisle of an airplane, and urge U.A. to make broad changes to its policies so that nothing similar happens.  U.A.'s CEO has already apologized and promised changes.

{B} Offering A Reward of $250 to anyone who has the valid
names and ethnicities of the 4 randomly rejected passengers
on U.A. flight 3411. Email sbw@udel.edu.
To those who posted on social media that 3 of 4 were Asians, please come up with the evidence! Thank you.
{C} Readers Expressed  support:

Our Readers overwhelmingly supported 80-20's position:

[A] If indeed 3 out of 4 of the randomly rejected passengers were Asians, as
rumored in some Chinese social media, then there could be a race element. 80-20 shall be vigilant.

[B] If otherwise, it is probably an abuse case, not a race caseDr. Dao and his
lawyers will likely be awarded millions if not tens of millions of dollars through court ordered "compensatory" and separately "punitive" damages or through settlement. Each nation has its own way of preventing abuses.
This is the way that the U.S. handles it.
(1) Totally agree!  Hidemi Matsushita, Ph.D., Chair, Department of Music

(5) Please advise what is the action of US Asia Community ?  Joe ZhouI
(6) Is it OK to forward this to our colleagues and/or post the attached image (from your email) on social medias?  Bo-Wen Shen, Ph.D. Dept. of Mathematics & Statistics
(7) Well said. I am heartened that 80-20 is taking a standing on this. Youxue
(8)The voice and response from Asian American community with other human rights activists is needed. Paul Chiou
(9)  thought about you and our forum immediately after the incident, and we are happy you are taking care of it. Huo, Shitao
(10) Glad you are watching. B leong
(11) Thanks for all that you've done to focus attention on issues of great concerns to Asian-Americans, but which receive very little attention in mainstream media.   We particularly appreciate all the work done in connection with the college admissions issues, which very significantly hurt Asian-Americans.  Please do focus on what happened on the United flight... Julie Chiu
(12) There are two issues here. An issue is about a mistreated paid and seated customer. The other issue is a civil right one on racial profiling/discrimination. We should not let the second issue be buried in the heat of the first issue. Yang Song
Apologies to those whose support letters, we are not publishing owing to space considerations.
{D} Readers Expressing Strong Feelings Against United Airlines
(1) "UA has been practicing racial discrimination many years. Many years ago my Chinese friend was on a UA flight starting from Houston, he used mileage to obtain first class seat and being forced to give up his seat to make room for a white person, even worse the airline refused to compensated him for the down grade, when he refused to give up his seat, the airline called police to haul him to police station for retention. A lawsuit ensued later and the case being settled out of court, no details allowed to be divulged though. It just shows racial discrimination is deep in American
corporate culture. Anthony Ching"
(2) "I urge you to fight this in the most legally aggressive way possible!  Hina W. Chaudhry, M.D., Associate Professor of Medicine, Director, Cardiovascular Regenerative Medicine, Mount Sinai School of Medicine"
(3) "That CEO needs to be fired. I myself have had very bad experience with the UA. Their service is horrible showing no care of customers whatsoever. That company has a lousy culture and needs a big change. I don't have doubt they have chosen Asian on purpose, based on their low moral mindset. What a jerky airline!"          Jeff Chen

"United Airline has been behaving this way for many years.  I had a very unpleasant experience several years ago when I flew from Boston to SF.  Given their boarding priority classification, I had to wait to board a plane for a long time as I did not fly United Airline often. When I complained about the waiting to an agent at the gate, they told me to shut up otherwise they would kick me off the plane. I was shocked by their rude and unprofessional behaviors, I asked the agent to give me her name and she refused to do that. Her coworkers also refused to give her name. It was an awful experience.
Although I contemplated, I did not pursue and take action against United Airline at that time since I am very busy with my life.  Looking at what's happening, I think they've got what they deserve and it is long overdue given their abusive behaviors towards their customers for many years.
                                  Moon, Aeri,M.D."
"I am on a wheelchair, and when I arrived at the check-in, they told me that you are late, and boarding has been completed. I later learned that that flight was overbooked.             Mohapatra, Partha"
"This is not enough, the  CEO have to resign.  Chengxiu Zhang"

"Myself had many bad experience with UA, probably also related to race issue, including one in December that UA did not fix their problem to let me check in my luggage for international flight to Beijing.   I had so Many bad cases. Their customer service was awful!  I would not use UA in December if there were other airlines direct flight from Hangzhou to USA for my return trip.                      Aihua Xie"
80-20 continues to work on your behalf to cut through the rumors and to take action where action is warranted.

Realpolitik

Realpolitik - how such feats are done.
Realpolitik That 80-20 Attends or Has  Attended To

(1) Realpolitik In the Tripling of AsAm Federal Judges:

On Jan. 31, 2008, presidential candidate Obama wrote me promising to "make it a top priority" of his "administration to nominate qualified AsAms to serve as life-tenured federal" District Court judges, Appeals Court judges and Supreme Court Justices. Today, the number of AsAm federal judges has tripled; those on the Appeals Court increased from zero to 4,  and 2 of the 4 have been prominently mentioned as possible future Supreme Court Justices.

Was there realpolitik behind the scene?  Of course.

80-20 Board Members wrote/called repeatedly many Democratic senior senators asking them to nominate an AsAm as 1 of his/her 3 nominees to Pres. Obama, when a federal judge seat in his/her state became vacant.   When it came to our knowledge that our request was honored, but NOT beforehand, 80-20 PAC donated to that senator.

(2)  Realpolitik to thank President Obama:  PAC spent about $60,000 for Pres. Obama's re-election campaign in 2012, and delivered a 73 to 23 bloc vote to him.

(3)  Realpolitik in College Admissions Nationwide:  Harvard was ordered by the court to give 6-yrs of its admissions record to SFFA (Students For Fair Admissions), led by Ed Blum.  In addition, SFFA lawyers took the deposition of Harvard President Drew Faust and took possession of Princeton's admission records which were also ordered by the court to go to SFFA.  Saying thank you to Blum is only proper.  But a realpolitik way is for 80-20 EF to donate $15,000 to SFFA, and help it recruit members.   Look, we are making progress in the admissions fight.  The vise is tightening!

(4) Realpolitik in DOJ's profiling of Chinese Americans: When attorney Pete Zeidenberg did an outstanding job defending Sherry Chen & Prof. Xiaoxing Xi, 80-20 EF organized a banquet to honor Zeidenberg  & raised $18,000 for Sherry Chen to pay off her then legal debt to Zeidenberg.

(5) Realpolitik in STOPPING DOJ's profiling of Chinese Americans:
We donated to Delaware senators and its only congressman AFTER they'd written letters to DOJ urging it to stop profiling AsAms in its investigation of stealing of national secrets. We also donated to Cong. Ted Lieu who led a group of Congresspersons in that fight. The profiling had led towrongful charges against Sherry Chen and Prof. Xi.  RESULT?   On April, 2016, NY Times published this front page article:

(6) Realpolitik to induce Elected AsAms to serve our rightful concerns:
80-20 donated generously to elected officials who share our rightful concerns like Ted Lieu and Fiona Ma,  80-20 also punished those who didn't, e.g. former CA Sen. Leland Yee and former Assemblyman Paul Fong who betrayed our community in the "stop SCA5 fight" in CA.  SCA5 stands for Senate Constitutional Amendment No. 5.  After SCA5 was stopped, 80-20 publicly announced to drive them out of politics.  Within a year, both were out of politics.

Does the AsAm community NEED at least one org. to attend to REALPOLITIK/ SELF-EMPOWERMENT?

Good News On 2 Fronts

Good News On Two Fronts

                                  GOOD NEWS
[A]  On the College Admissions Figh

  1.  Andrew Lam, 1 of 80-20 EF's 2  newest Board Members, was in the news front again.  A few weeks ago, he wrote an Op Ed in the New York Times, entitled
White Students' Unfair Advantage in Admissions
A few days ago, he was on Public Broadcasting Service (PBS) Newshour.  To hearclick HERE.

  2.  Wall Street Journal reported the following Gallup Poll findings:
"7 in 10 people - including 76% of whites, 61% of Hispanics and 50 % of blacks - said colleges should admit applicants based 'solely on merit.'"
Please forward the e-newsletter to your friends, YOU will be empowering yourself.
[B] An Empowering
Move by the Indian Am. Community

NYT reported:  "Since Ian Grillot intervened in a shooting in February that left one Indian immigrant dead and another one wounded, Indian immigrants have rallied to help him in return. .... Mr. Grillot ran at a gunman and   ... was also shot.

India House Houston, a nonprofit organization, presented Mr. Grillot with $100,000, which it had raised to help him buy a home."  How appropriately and how nicely the Indian-Am community has served itself and the entire AsAm community.

Empowering ourselves & where YOU come in

ALL OF US WISH that we could have the kind of political clout that the Jewish American community has.   Will wishing get us there?
STOP WISHING.  START DOING - step by painstaking steps!   Will you consider pitching in please?
                       Money Talks
The Jewish community has a fabled political organization entitled The American Israel Public Affairs Committee, AIPAC.  To serve the 6 million Jewish Americans, its annual budget was a whopping $67 million 4 years ago.
80-20 Initiative has established an 80-20 PAC and a 501 c-3 org., 80-20 Educational Foundation.   Together, they function like the Jewish AIPAC.  However, to serve the 16 million AsAms, PAC has an annual budget of $0.1 million, and EF has an annual budget of about $0.18 million.
Are we discouraged by the lopsided comparison?  Not at all.  We believe in empowering ourselves, step by painstaking steps.
4 years ago, EF started SELF  (Self Empowerment Long-term Fund).  Today SELF has grown to $2.6 million - a historic feat.  Click here to verify. See the "Total Donations Received" line.  Scroll down on that page to see those names shown in a pink background. They are model-donors who completed their 5-yr pledges in 4 years.  For our future generations!
Are AsAm Rich Folks Doing their Share to Help?
NO.  They are too "smart" to do their share.  They would rather give money to  "Harvard" to get a building named after them.  What a shame.  "Charity starts at home."  The AsAm rich folks need to do their share to help us win equal opportunity.  80-20 always tells it like it is. If no others will point it out, 80-20 will.  Why is 80-20 making them mad?  Quite to the contrary, in the long run, our rich folks & their children will thank us for jolting their community consciousness -- another of the painstaking steps we must take.
                        Leadership Counts
   Money Talks.  Additionally, leadership counts.
80-20 EF's Board recently added two new members - again, step by painstaking  steps. They are doctors Andrew Lam & Larry Shen
Their DISTINGUISHED  bios are shown as footnotes below.
Your Support Counts Even More.
Only an estimated 15,000 AsAms have ever helped 80-20 with money and/or time.  The rest of the 16 million AsAms have not lifted a finger to help.
If you belong to that group, help today!  Why?  Because you are actually empowering YOURSELF & YOUR CHILDREN to win equal opportunity.  There are so many ways to help.  Act today!  :-)

Princeton Univ's Words vs Deeds

Words without Deeds Never to Heaven Go
                WordsTransparency, Transparency!
If an individual is fortunate enough to speak to the president of Princeton University, and ask the following question: "I've not done anything wrong. What can I do to gain public trust?"
These words will likely thunder down from the mouth of the august president: "Transparency.  Transparency. Transparency."
Deeds: Princeton Suing to block release of admissions records
But will the president walk the talk?  When the Dept. of Education decided to release documents, submitted by Princeton in its defense against a suit filed by SFFA (Students for Fair Admissions) for discriminatory admissions practices against Asian American students, Princeton opposed.  See the news reported by Politicos 3 days go:
Please note that DOE is only releasing documents that have been redacted of any "personally identifiable information" about individual applicants.
                  Words Without Deeds
Paraphrasing King Claudius of Hamlet, who mused to himself after praying:
My words fly up, my deeds remain below:
Words without deeds never to heaven go.
Does Princeton Univ. Have  A Better Option?
Ivy League colleges have adopted a "merits-be-damned" approach to limit the number of Asian students since about 1990.  See the powerful graph below, presented by Ron Unz's "The Myth of American Meritocracy":
The above figure caption states: "Trends of Asian enrollment at Caltech and the Ivy League universities, compared with growth of Asian College age population.  Asian age cohorts population figures are based on Census CPS, and given the small sample size, are subject to considerable yearly statistical fluctuations."
Today, America's core value of equal opportunity and the 14th Amendment on equal protection are being trampled upon. The credibility of Ivy League colleges suffers. The colleges can no longer walk the talk of the noble principles they expound. As the truth emerges, students and scholars shake their heads and chuckle at the false facade put up by Ivy League schools.
Princeton's president is Christopher L. Eisgruber, a renowned constitutional scholar.   Does President Eisgruber truly think that there is no discrimination under an affirmative admissions policy, where upon AsAms applicants, on average, are forced to yield 140 SAT points to White peers in order to gain equal access?
Please forward this e-newsletter to anyone who is associated with Princeton University.  Thank you.
