80-20 is Dying

Most Asian Am wish to have Jewish community's political clout.

Most Asian Americans overlook that

(1) AIPAC has a $67 million per year budgetas opposed to 80-20's $100,000 - a difference of 67,000%!

(2) wealthy Jewish-Am merchants, sensing their responsibility, raised a 140 million endowment for AIPAC as opposed to 80-20's desperate effort to raise $1 million/yr for 5 years.

Even for the puny $1 m/yr for 5 yrs sum, 80-20 needs to get $1,400 per year committed for 5 year EACH DAY.  However, in the last 3 months, 80-20 didn't even raise that much per week.

If SELF succeeds, how will 80-20 spend that money?  see Footnote.

(3) a huge number of Jewish Americans TITHE for a Jewish cause.  Do you?

IT IS TIME to share the unpleasant but honest truth -  80-20 is dying*.

Asian Americans, you need to give till it hurts, if you don't want to be stepped on politically as in the past.

Look, the currently leaders of 80-20 don't get to spend the money raised in SELF.  Most of the top leadership will be retiring within the next years.  S.B. Woo will retire by the end of 2016.  Some days, he wished that he had retired yesterday.   :-)

When our community does its part, 80-20's leaders will try do their part!  That is a pledge.

Footnote: 80-20 will spend about $0.5 million per year, if SELF reaches its goal.
(1) $100,000 for forging unity - to be in control of the Board of Donors
(2) $ 300,000 for 3 staff: one Executive Director at about $150k level, one Assoc. Exe. Dir. at about $100k and one secretary at about $50k per year.
(3) $100,000 for office expenses, including cyberspace expenses.

* Could there be a better replacement for 80-20 in the future?  You judge.  Judge carefully!  You are betting on your offspring's destiny.

S. B. Woo wants to thank and apologize to all those, who supported 80-20 and him greatly, for sending the above blunt message.  It's crunch time now.  :-(  If he doesn't send the truth to you, he probably commits a bigger mistake.

AsAms, courage is your name

BACKGROUND

This e-newsletter will illustrate the value of 80-20, made possible by your courage, support and sacrifice.

Time was from Nov., 2007 to Jan., 2008.   80-20 fought two pitched battles with 2 leading Democratic presidential candidates, Sen. Hillary Clinton & Sen. B. Obama.

Result?  3 AsAm cabinet members were appointed in 2009. AsAm federal judges tripled in the last 6 years.  The U.S. Labor Dept. stated in writing to 80-20 that EO 11246 appliedto AsAms as well -- something that Elaine Chao heartlessly refused to do when she was the Labor Secretary.

Take a look at the titles of the e-newsletters, shown below, that 80-20 sent during that period. Where did we get such COURAGE?  FROM YOU!

80-20 sent a questionnaire to presidential candidates, because each election was an opportunity to get the next president's promise to help our climb to equal citizen-ship.  Easy to get them to reply?  NO!  It'd take great courage, skill & sacrifice.

The First Battle

By Nov., 2007, candidates like Sens. Biden, Dodd and Gravel had answered 80-20's questionnaire  with 6 yeses.  Unfortunately, the apparent "leading" candidate Sen. H. Clinton didn't.  After behind the scene pleading with Clinton had failed, 80-20went public with a "call to action" asking the AsAm public to tell Clinton how we felt. That didn't work either.  A battle unfolded.  Happily, Sen. Clinton saw our plight.  She graciously replied with 6 yeses.

  • 11/27/2007   Call To Action - Write to Sen. Clinton's Campaign
  • 12/01   Clinton's Statement Versus 80-20's 6 Questions
  • 12/03   Faxes from Asian Ams to Sen. Clinton
  • 12/05    Spreading Outrage Against Sen. Clinton (80-20 asked "Does Sen. Clinton have the courage to stand up for America's core value -- equal opportunity?)
  • 12/10/2007  Sen. Clinton Replied to 80-20's Questionnaire with All Yeses

The Second Battle

Sen. Edwards & Gov. Richardson followed with 6 yeses, but NOT Sen. Obama.  Behind the scene pleading occurred.  That didn't  work.  80-20 again went public and issued a "call to action' asking the AsAm public to fax Obama.

That didn't work either.  The 2nd battle unfolded.  80-20 called to defeat Obama twice!  We endorsed Sen. Clinton in CA's primary, and bought newspaper and radio ads in CA asking AsAm to vote for Hillary.  Our message got through.  Sen. Obama also graciously answered with 6 yeses.  In return, 80-20 deleted the contents of all e-newsletters with a * to the left, because those were words of anger said in a fierce fight.

LA Times article about S. B. Woo

It takes a village.  Don't just sit and watch.

Want to read what caused S B Woo to organize 80-20 PAC?  Chang-lin Tien, others and S.B. Woo organized 80-20, when most AsAms were recoiling from politics owing to "Asia gate," that ravaged the AsAm community from 1997 to 2000.

This LA Times article gave a full page* to Woo, with a picture, shown below, in the middle of the page.  Click here to read (note: you need to go below the ads to read the rest of the article.  There are may such ads.)

* Unfortunately, LA Times has drastically abridged this and other archived articles.  But you'll still get a good sense of how some of us are willing to knock ourselves out to serve the needs of the Asian Am community.

It's embarrassing to publish articles about oneself.  But the China Daily article about S. B. Woo was clicked by more than 1,150 supporters - 10 times the click rate of an average link. It also brought in considerable donation.  So 80-20 is answering to your interest.  :-)

Q&A on 80-20, You and SELF

Q 1: What is SELF again?
A:  SELF is 80-20's last effort to keep itself alive, after its old war horses have faded away.  SELF stands for Self Empowerment Long-term Fund.  Its relevant info are:

   (1) tax deductible,
   (2) if SELF doesn't achieve its minimum goals of rising $1 million/yr for 5 years, your donation will be refunded in FULL, and
   (3) anyone of any nationality can give any amount.

Money talks.  80-20 will serve you even better if it raises that money!  So  click here to donate .  You have NOTHING TO LOSE, and everything to gain.

Q 2: What has 80-20 done to deserve your donation?
A:  Just this year 80-20 has

   (a) set a tradition for AsAm elected officials to serve your rightful interests.  You should know that many spineless AsAm officials will take your money and votes but don't fight for your rightful interests.  80-20 has set them straight, and
   (b) refocused the college admissions debate to highlight only the unfair treatment of Asian American students.

Q 3: How did 80-20 achieve this accountability?
A:   Politicians want to be re-elected.   When an issue that requires AsAm officials to stand up for AsAm interests comes up, they may duck for fear of losing the votes of the non-AsAm voters in their respective districts.  Sen. Leland Yee and Assemblyman Paul Fong did just that in CA's SCA-5 issue.  So 80-20  punished them by getting them out of politics this year.  80-20's message?  If you don't live up to your responsibility, you'll be defeated anyway.  So be accountable and fight for us!
Can anyone but 80-20 achieve such a feat?

Q 4: How did 80-20 focus attention on discrimination against AsAms only?
A:  By working for 2 years with giants like Ed Blum and his lawyers who HAVE THE RESOURCES and are determined  to get rid of race preference college admissions through court battles.   Ed Blum and his group has just filed a lawsuit against Harvard focused only on its unfair treatment of the AsAm applicants.  The power of that lawsuit has already induced articles from NY Times, Wall Street Journal and USA Today stating that Harvard's position to limit the number of AsAm students is untenable.

Can anyone but 80-20 achieve such a feat?

Q 5:  Why is 80-20 tooting its own horn so loudly?
A:   We wish we didn't have to.  :-(  The old war horses have nothing to gain. They work 40 to 60 hours per week without pay for our community for the last 10 to 16 years. They've given tens of thousands of dollars to 80-20.  They risked offending their political friends in order to serve you. They will NOT be using the SELF money.  They are raising the SELF money for your future - money for the next generation of 80-20 leaders to spend.  Is their sacrifice, and their fight for you so hard for you to understand?
