Threats Trigger Opportunities

We mourn for those who were killed. We sympathize with those who were injured by verbal and/or physical violence. At the same time, we need to seize the moment to create great opportunities for ourselves.

[A] Creating Opportunity 1:

The following are words from Pres. Biden and V.P. Harris, said 3 days ago
at the height of Covid-19 anti-Asian hate crimes. Their words will be most helpful, if and when we ever face the danger of internment or another wave of hate against AsAms.

From V.P. Harris:  “Sadly, it is not new. Racism is real in America, it has always been. Xenophobia is real in America. It has always been; sexism too. In the 1860s, as Chinese workers built the transcontinental railroad, there were laws in the books in America forbidding them from owning property. In the 1940s, as Japanese American soldiers defended our nation, more than 120,000 Japanese Americans were forced to live in internment camps, an obvious and absolute abuse of their civil and human rights.”

From President Biden: “Hate and violence often hide in plain sight and it's often met with silence. That’s been true throughout our history. But that has to change because our silence is complicity. We cannot be complicit. We have to speak out. We have to act.”

To hear both, click here. First scroll down to the the video. On the video, to hear these words from Harris, go from 1:14 to 2:00. For Biden, go from 7:30 to 8:00.

Please keep & spread these words to turn them into a lasting wall of protection for our civil rights.

[B] Creating Opportunity 2 - Organize Community Watch Teams

What can we do for self-help?

80-20 will finance up to $200,000 to help seed COMMUNITY WATCH teams in our ethnic communities* i.e. Korean-, Indian-, Vietnamese-, Filipino-, Japan-, & Chinatowns. To learn about such teams organized by innovative local AsAm leaders, click here (12, or 3; please wait out the commercials and turn the sound on).

For community leaders interested in working with 80-20 to organize such COMMUNITY WATCH teams, please contact Stephen Lin, Special Assistant to the President, 80-20 EF via stephen.lin@80-20ef.org or 925-548-3882.

Each team is composed of 6 to 10 members, with English and ethnic language(s) capability and a working relationship with the local police. They will be armed only by whistles, pepper spray cans, and members' own cell phones. Each patrolling member will be identified by a bright sash with a team name. The sashes will be switchable to members of the next shift. 80-20 will provide the sashes and whistles. For the next 2 months, 80-20 will also compensate each patrolling member $10 per hour up to 3 hours per weekend evening, provided that a responsible local organization will match the compensation.

The media attention is great but it may also induce copycats with bad intentions. So we urge leaders and leading organizations of ethnic communities to seriously consider setting up such COMMUNITY WATCH teams quickly. 80-20 also hopes that COMMUNITY WATCH teams will become a fixture exemplifying SELF-HELP. No help is more instantly available and reliable than SELF-HELP!

Kindly Please Take A Minute of Your Precious Time to Help 80-20

80-20 is conducting a research project of some significance.

After the project is completed, if 80-20's Board approves of reporting the research conclusion to the public, YOU, who are on our email list, will be the first to know

Q 1: Have you personally experienced a Covid-19 related hate crime against you in the last 12 months?

If yesplease relate via an email to me. Please state (1) Yes. I had a personal or firsthand experience, & (2) the approximate date, city and state where it happened.

Please DO NOT REPORT robbery or theft or extremely minor incidents like a bump against another person while walking, or a presumed dirty look against you, or a person standing up just when you sat down next to hIm, as such a crime. We ask you to report it if and only if you are quite certain that it was a Covid-related hate crime.

Q 2: Has a close relative, or a close friend, or an office colleague who is an AsAm personally told you that he/she has experienced a Covid-19 related hate crime in the last 12 months?

If yesplease relate via an email to me. Please state (1) Yes. I have secondhand information about an anti-AsAm Covid-related hate crime, & (2) the approximate date, city and state where it happened.

Please DO NOT REPORT what you've read or heard from the media. That is considered as thirdhand information. 80-20 is NOT interested in any thirdhand info of such crimes.

Thank you very much for taking your precious time to relate a firsthand and/or secondhand Covid-19 hate crime against AsAms to 80-20.

Bloc Vote Won the 2020 Election

Want Political Clout?

Then follow 80-20's leadership & cast a bloc vote in a presidential primary election in CA in the future!   Using that clout, we'll win eqaul
opportunity.

80-20 has advocated the above numerous times.  However, the strategy requires such deep understanding of politics that most AsAm voters are understandably not accepting it yet.   Are we disappointed? NO, we persist.   Please read the following to be SHOCKED by how powerful a bloc vote is in the REAL WORLD of the 2020 Election.

Biden would not be our President without the Black bloc vote

(A) REAL world election data of 2020 is used:

     i) The following table is provided by the CNN Exit Poll. It shows that African American community had 13% vote share and voted 9 to 1 for Biden. We use those 2 statistics in preparing section (B) shown below:\
ii) Click here to verify the % of black population in the 50 states, used in (B).
iii) Click here to verify the winning margin of Biden in each state, used in (B).

(B) Biden Would Have Lost the Electoral College Vote Without the Black Vote:
Total number of Electoral College Vote: 79 votes
Biden’s final electoral vote is 306.  (306 -79) = 227 which is less than 270.  Therefore Biden would have lost the 2020 election, if he didn’t have the blacks voting for him at 90% to 10%.  That is political clout!

Can AsAms Manage A Similar Amount of Political Clout?

Not the identical amount. However, we can manage a whole lot more political clout, if we shall "cast a bloc vote in a presidential primary election in CA in the future!"

Why in CA? In CA, AsAms have the highest % of vote share - 8%.

Why in a primary? Because only 1/2 to 1/3 of voters vote in a primary. If
all AsAm voters turn out, then our vote share jumps by a factor of 2 to 3,
giving us a vote share of 16% to 24%. With that kind of vote share, if we
cast a bloc vote, then we can control which presidential candidate will win
the CA presidential primary - that will be ample political clout to win equal opportunity for all AsAms, adults and children.

PS: In last week's e-newsletter, I forgot to state that 80-20 used to hire an accountant to do our IRS filing. Later, 80-20 was fortunate enough to get an AsAm accountant to volunteer to do that job. In recent years, our Treasurer, Wei-jing Zhu, has handled that time-consuming job.
