EF took on the HI Report & got the job done

Together, we got the job done.                                                    80-20 EF's Leadership Made the Difference     We urged attendance.  Result?  The 160 seat capacity hall was filled to standing room only.       There were 4 panelists.  Two were authors of the HI Report, Larry Diamond and Elizabeth Economy.  Two were very well-known China hands, Prof. Gordon Chang and David Mike Lampton.   Both are also with the Stanford Univ.  The two authors of course defended what they did.  But the two neutral panelists criticized the report severely.        For you to get a feeling of the critiques stated by the two guest panelists &  a sense of their impact on the to-be-revised-version of HI Report, I'll give you  a summary of what Chang and Lampton each said, interspersed with Diamond's CONCLUDING response to their criticism.  Chang:  Prof. Chang was openly critical of the tone and accuracy of the report. For example, he conferred with the folks in charge of the Confucius Institute at Stanford.  They could not substantiate any of the accusations in the HI Report alleging nefarious activities in the Confucius Institute. He thought the report was a gross distortion of the relations between China and the US. Diamond:  "Let me say, Gordon, I've taken very careful notes, and I'd welcome the chance  to get together with you, and go through it in greater detail....we don't want to say things that are wrong by assertion or implication...so, we want to address that and I appreciate your candor here.  I will say there are many Chinese Americans who have approached us and thanked us, and that have concerns about this..I'm not going to name them, but some of them are very prominent in the Chinese American community...and they are worried about what they see as rising interference and pressure, and in some cases intimidation, and what it could mean for the Chinese American community going forward in the United States...so I just need to say that, we need to obviously proceed with the tone and documentation that doesn't contribute to what we want to avoid, and I take that to heart." (emphasis added) D. Mike Lampton:  Dr. Lampton thought the report did not distinguish facts from non-facts, legitimate from illegitimate activities, when China is acting as provocateur from reacting to outside provocation.  The report lacks balance and has put a target on the back of every member of the Chinese diaspora. (emphasis added)   Diamond: "I think Mike really said it very well, I spend a lot of time in my forthcoming book making the same point, that our biggest asset is our openness, our democratic values, our pluralism as a society, if we govern ourselves properly, those  were  your words...I emphatically endorse that, Mike, I'll say again" (emphasis added)   Former Sec. of Energy Steven Chu also critiqued the HI Report     Sec. Chu stood up and stated that the policy that the HI Report was advocating would drive out most of the top talents in science and technology who are of Chinese descent.  So the HI Report was not balanced, since it didn't mention the "opportunity cost" to our nation. To which Mr. Diamond replied that what "Secretary Chu outlined is very justifiably (something we are) worried about."      Mr. Diamond ended his concluding remarks by pointing all the mistakes to China's recent changes.  He said, "... we want to pre-empt the dangers."        Might Mr. Diamond have instead pre-emptively created dangers for the Ch-Am community, the U.S.A. for driving out a huge portion of its much needed STEM talents, and the world for his frenzy about BIG POWER politics?       The panel discussion on Feb. 14 at Hoover Institute is not as worthy.  The panelists will all be authors of the HI Report plus a graduate student.  However, there is follow-up work to do.  Is Mr. Diamond really going to significant revise  that report?  If he doesn't then the HI Report will remain the least scholarly report ever written by a group of 32 China hands.         On behalf of the 80-20 EF Board, I want to thank all of you for your great help in turning back this threat.  Don't relax.  Things will likely get even worse, as we've repeatedly warned you since many months ago.                                     Post your views here.      Donate S. When:       4:30 PM - 6:00 PM, February 11 (Monday) Where:      Bechtel Conference Room, Encina Hall, 1st Floor, [Note the change                    to a larger room to accommodate people responding to EF's call  :-)]                    616 Serra Mall, Stanford,CA 94305. Required:  Must RSVP by 5PM February 10.   Click here to register.            The panel speakers include scholars who co-wrote the Hoover Institute ("H.I.") report, "Chinese Influence & American Interests," with Section 3 entitled "The Chinese American Community."  In the H.I. report, they insinuated that Chinese Americans are endangering American interests or are under the influence of the Chinese government when these Chinese Americans help China legally, promote the peaceful reunification of China, or criticize U.S. foreign policy regarding China.     The Board of Directors of 80-20 EF views the allegations of these "scholars" as completely unjustified, and are loath their possible attempt to intimidate the Chinese American community.  These "scholars" seem so  politically worked up about Big Power politics that they have forgotten the human nature of naturalized citizens and the Constitutional Rights of US citizens. Hopefully, they will revise their writings & apologize to the Chinese Am.  community.  Otherwise, the H.I. report will be known as the least scholarly article  ever written by a group of 32 "scholars."          80-20 EF takes inspiration from the words of the late Judge Vincent Bifferato of Delaware, America's First State, spoken at S.B. Woo's naturalization ceremony:     "Let me assure you that you don't need to stop caring or helping the people in your old country. . . . The U.S.  is a greater nation than that.  America , a nation of immigrants, knows that people, who can turn their backs to their people instantly today after one ceremony, can turn their back to Americans tomorrow.  Instant loyalty doesn't imply good citizenship. Take your time to know your new country.  Examine America's core values.  Experience America's sense of liberty, justice and equal opportunity.  I feel certain that you will get to like America and perhaps love it.  America is not perfect, and will need your input and tender-loving care to help make it "a more perfect union" as our forefathers had hoped."      80-20 EF has urged Asian Americans to go to this forum to defend our rights to help other countries in peace time while doing our part to make America "a more perfect union."                                           Post your views here. Required:  RSVP by 5PM February 10.; Registration link: https://events.stanford.edu/events/823/82331/                              In peace time, we, naturalized citizens, have our rights to care for & help people in our respective old countries.  Remember these sacred words from our Declaration of Independence:  We hold these truths to be sacred & undeniable; that all men are  created equal & independent, that from that equal creation they  derive rights inherent & inalienable, among which are the preserva-tion of life, & liberty, & the pursuit of happiness .... (emphasis added)             The Jewish-Ams and Irish-Ams certainly exercised those rights very prominently. NO scholar has ever accused them of being "under the influence". So don't let those "scholars" who are hyper-worked up by the politics of BIG POWER politics intimidate you and/or suppress our rights.      Go there with only one SINGLE purpose in mind -  to defend our rights.   Don't get sucked into discussions of (1) right or left wing politics, (2) whether Big Power politics is the correct reading of the world, and (3) Our foreign policy.  We have the rights to speak out on U.S. foreign policy.  But let's focus on protecting our rights first.   Don't debate the specifics at this point.       Simply ask:   Do we as as citizens or naturalized citizens  (a) have the rights to care for & help people in our respective old countries in        peace time? (b) have the rights to advocate for the peaceful unification of China or the        independence of Taiwan? and (c) have the rights to accept hospitality of the Chinese government to visit China? Why did so many politicians accept free travel to Israel and no one seemed to criticize them?        Also ask: (d)  Is Sec. 3 of the H.I report, entitled "The Chinese American community",       especially its footnote 20 regarding C-100 and George Koo, an attempt to        intimidate the Chinese Ams?  Is there any legal basis to accuse them? (e)  Will authors of the H.I. report be revising the contents & apologizing to the        Chinese-Am community?       The Jewish community has always reacted very strongly to the least sign of anti-Semitism, because they know if it is not stopped early, then the racists will push further and further. They have been taught by the Holocaust experience,while we've been taught by the Internment of Japanese Americans in WWII and the earlier Chinese Exclusion Act.       SPEAK UP STRONGLY, but narrowly on one issue only -- our rights.  STOP the infringement on our rights NOW!                               C-100 & Frank Wu Still Play Dead      After almost 3 months of having C-100's integrity publicly questioned, it is still silent. The "friendly dinner" that Frank Wu & some members of the H.I.group, attended many days ago, supposedly let to an agreement to keep the discussion private. Has C-100 a sense of responsibility to clarify the controversy with the Chinese-Am community? C-100 is not just embarrassing our community & its members, it is now humiliating itself.
