Progress from DOJ

On June 24, 80-20 President S. B. Woo sent a "certified, return receipt requested" letter to the A.G. It asked A.G. Garland to "open your eyes and see what is happening UNDER YOUR WATCH".

On July 6, DOJ acknowledged the receipt of Woo's letter. See the underlined parts on the right half of "returned receipt," shown below:
On 7/159 days after DOJ had acknowledged 80-20's letter to the A.G.

On July 22, 16 days after the arrival of Woo's letter, DOJ dropped more cases against Chinese researchers accused of hiding ties to the Chinese military. Those individuals have all suffered bad publicity & government abuse. Click on each name to see the DOJ record on them, & you'll understand what I mean.

  • Lei Guan (关磊), Visiting researcher (mathematics), U. of CA at LA
  • Dr. Chen Song (宋琛), Visiting researcher (neurology), Stanford U.
  • Dr. Juan Tang (唐娟), Visiting researcher (cancer), U. of CA at Davis
  • Xin Wang (王欣), Visiting researcher (neurology), U. of CA at SF
  • Kaikai Zhao (赵凯凯), Doctoral candidate (machine learning and artificial intelligence), Indiana U.

Apparently, DOJ has RE-EVALUATED* its prosecution procedure against suspects of Chinese descent.

80-20 played a role in stimulating that much needed RE-EVALUATION! 80-20 was the only organization that has written the A.G. directly and asked him to tighten his ship in the investigation & prosecution of Chinese scientists. We frankly called out some of the DOJ practices as the abuse of government power to violate the human rights of Chinese Americans - a very serious charge!

With such a positive development, we'd like credit the dropping of the 6 cases as the cumulative effort of ALL orgs. which worked on this issue.

UCA (United Chinese Americans) has written to the White House, and called for a moratorium on prosecuting Chinese scientists and scholars. Jeremy Wu's APA Justice Force has held webinars stressing the need to drop the "China Initiative" project.

We note, however, that the "China Initiative" has NOT been dropped. Six (6) cases were dropped "in the interest of justice", according to the DOJ, however, they "remain fully committed to investigating hundreds of Chinese scientists.

Finally, with trepidation, 80-20 respectfully reminds our fellow activists that we may be spending too much time talking to fellow AsAms, which is like "preaching to the choir". ACTIVISTS cannot be timid. If one can't stand the heat, then get out of the kitchen. All of us need to take BOLD & DIRECT ACTIONS.

Another Example: BOLD & DIRECT ACTION Gets the Result

In 6/2019, Woo wrote a letter to FBI Director Wray strongly protesting Wray's "advocacy to apply a 'whole-of-society approach' to stop spying by students & scholars of Chinese origin." Woo described Wray's suggested methodology as "TOTALITARIAN". FBI acknowledged Woo's letter expressing appreciation "of your taking the time to express your concerns." Since then, Director Wray has NOT advocated a "whole-of-society approach."

In contrast, an AsAm coalition, which did NOT include 80-20, wrote Director Wray a timid letter about the same issue, and requested a reply. The letter was ignored. Being ignored, the coalition quietly abandon the fight. :-(

Political know-how serves you more effectively!
