Our FEARS - Looming Dangers
The Situation Today:
(1) Number of daily COVID-19 deaths: about 1,000 deaths reported yesterday.
(2) Number of newly unemployed persons: 3.3 million filed unemployment last week. Unemployment may rise to 30% or 30+ million workers, according to the Pres. of Federal Reserve Bank, St. Louis.
(4) Stock market: Way down.
The Situation 16 Days from Today
(1) Number of daily COVID-19 deaths: estimated to be 16,000+*. By comparison, normally 7500 persons die per day from other causes.
(2) Number of newly unemployed persons: The unemployment claims this week - 6.6 million -- is already double the 3.3 million from last week, which was already a record. Others say that the total number of NEWLY unemployed may go as high as 34.2 million in a few months. Think about the mood of these newly unemployed! In 1982, when Japan's autos began to enter the US market, Vincent Chin, a Chinese Am. was bashed to death with a baseball bat by 2 unemployed auto workers in Detroit, who took him to be Japanese.
(3) Number of racist acts against AsAms per week: ??? It depends greatly on what proactive measures our community leaders will take.
(4) Stock market: Still way down, we conjecture.
Our HOPES - Our Leaders Will Lead!
"God helps those who help themselves." We hope that leaders of the AsAm community will take proactive measures to face this looming, potential crisis. We also hope that our fellow Americans will be calm, compassionate and focused. We all know that we must unite to overcome this terrible virus.
80-20 TAKES PROACTIVE MEASURES
80-20 will take 2 measures to increase our community's ability to defend itself.
80-20 EF shall express its sincere desire to work with each of these leaders and share resources, if the tsunami hits us. We hope that we can at least form a temporary coalition of equals, if a crisis of huge numbers of racist acts against AsAms occurs. 80-20 shall NOT let any past differences stand in the way of joining this temporary coalition.
(II) We'll contact the Jewish Council for Public Affairs, JCPA, to thank again JCPA and another 70+ Jewish orgs for their kind offer of solidarity together of Feb. 21, 2020. They pledged "to help ensure that Chinese people feel safe. "
We will seek JCPA's advice as to what concrete steps we can take to defend ourselves, and what steps the Jewish and AsAm communities can take together for the same purpose.
* The U.S. cumulative death rate doubles every 4 days, we very conservatively assume the same for daily death rate. 16 days is made up of four 4-day periods, hence one needs to multiply yesterday's death of about 1,000 by (2 x 2 x 2 x 2) to estimate the number of deaths 16 days from today. Please also note that in yet another 4 days, the daily death rate will be 32,000+, unless the pandemic is beginning to die down.
