To Serve on BOD! Step Up!

"He or she who serves almost always benefits more than he or she who is served."       -- Waldo Ralph Emerson

Board of Donors is to be elected

A Board of Donors, BOD, will be elected by donors (about 1400 persons) of 80-20's SELF project.  The BOD's functions will be:

1) to verify the existence of the escrow account on behalf of all donors,
2) to advise and help 80-20 accomplish its SELF fundraising goal,
3) be in complete control of $100,000 per year to forge UNITY of the AsAm community, starting Nov. 2015 when SELF is accomplished,
4) to draft a set of bylaws for the BOD in order to accomplish the above described functions, in consultation with 80-20 EF.

                                  Q&A regarding BOD

Q: Who are the voting members of the BOD?
All who have donated $50 or more to SELF, up till 2 days before the day of the election of BOD, are voting members. Voting members may not only vote but also nominate self and/or others to run for BOD. You're to submit your nominations to the Election Committee via <8020office@gmail.com>

Q: What are the voting powers of each donor?
To encourage generosity, the bigger donors will have a bit more voting power. Those donating
$50 to $99 : 1 vote              $100 to $499: 2 votes
$500 to $999: 3 votes         $1,000 to $1,999: 4 votes
$2000 to $4,999: 5 votes     $5,000 or more: 6 votes

Q: Why would YOU want to be a BOD member?
The BOD will have $100,000 in its complete control to distribute to any AsAm orgs. and/or projects which share the same goal as 80-20 and which see UNITY of the AsAm community as a must. Hence, an innovative and effective BOD member can make  a historic contribution to the forging
of UNITY within the AsAm community. $100,000 is a lot of money. Currently, it is the combined annual budget of 80-20 PAC and EF.

Q: How many BOD Members will be elected?
It depends. The more candidates we'll have, the more Board members we'll elect. All self nominations will be accepted. The prior consent of a nominee is required, if a donor is to nominate others.

Q: When will the election be?
When we have 10 or more candidates.  All candidates will LATER need to provide a 150-word candidate statement listing her/his qualifications, visions and the number of hours per week he/she can give for Board related work.

ASK YOURSELF: when has an AsAm organization set money aside to forge UNITY?  To the tune of $100,000/year?   UNITY after all, is the ultimate salvation  for a small minority like the AsAms.  80-20 works to improve your BIG interests that you yourself don't have the time and/or ability to achieve.

So help 80-20 back.  It is unique.  It is worthy.  DONATE here.  Help SELF reach $400,000/yr for 5 yrs before its first anniversary on 10/21 !

Goal reached! Thanks. Election Set.

Q:  Congratulation.  Are you pleased?
A: The feeling is PROUD.  80-20 is so PROUD of the 200 wonderful individuals who responded to our appeal and achieved the $350,000/yr for 5 years goal by 9/30/2014.  They did it with 7-days to spare.   Proud of them!

Q:  So when will the election of Board of Donors (BOD) be?
A:  As soon as we have 10 or more candidates, we'll set a date to elect slightly less than 10 so that it will be a real election.   Hopefully it will be around 10/21/2014 - first anniversary of SELF.   We welcome self nomination.  To know  more about the BODclick here.   BOD is important.  It also has its own funding.

Q:  What do you mean by "real goal failing"?
A: The real goal is to reach $1 million/yr for 5 years in 2 years.  11 months have passed.  If we are on target, we should have raised $458,333/yr. Hence, there is another way to look at our $350,000/yr "success". We are failing!  We are 24% behind our schedule.

Q: You are the president of Woo's Foundation (WF).  If SELF is so much behind target, why are you giving away 1/3 of WF's total asset to chase a small goal, when the real goal is failing so badly?
A:  Board members of 80-20 believe in trying harder when things go bad. Proudly, board members of WF feel the same way.  We believe that WF's sacrifice, together with sacrifices of 1400 donors to SELF, may perhaps set small examples for other Asian Ams to step forth, and help achieve the
REAL goal - $1 million/yr for 5 years by 10/21/2015.

Q;  80-20 practices "When the going gets tough, the tough gets going"?
A: Yes.  America is the land of the free and home of the brave.

Q:  What if SELF fails to reach $1 million/yr for 5 years by 10/21/2015?
A:  80-20 will likely demise.  Not a single penny of the $561,799 that 80-20 has received was spent.  All donations will be refunded in full.

Q: Can you end this e-newsletter with a more cheerful message?  :-)
A:  Love to.  Don't stop donating!  Keep the momentum going. If SELF (Self Empowerment Long-term Fund) can reach $400,000/yr for 5 years by 10/21/2014 i.e. a daily donation influx of $1,700 for 27 days, I am 90% confident that SELF will succeed at the end!

More significantly, when the word spreads that the Asian Ams are willing to sacrifice to such an extent to empower ourselves, America will greatly increase its respect for Asian Ams.  Much of our problems will automatically go away!!!!

Q:  Right!  The implication of this willingness to sacrifice for the
benefit of the whole will solve most of our problems automatically.
How can we raise another "$50,000/yr for 5 yrs in 27 days"?
A:  It's take noble individuals.  Everyday, 17 such individuals will need to step up and donate $100/yr for 5 years, or 1 person to donate $1000/yrfor 5 years, and others to donate $100/yr for 5 years or some other such combinations. Make your money TALK loudly for yourself through 80-20!   It is cost- effective.  To DONATE, click here.   THANK YOU.

It's all YOU! We are 4/5 way to our goal.

THANKS TO YOU,  we've  pushed the total donation from $300,000/yr for 5 years to $340,065/yr for 5 years.  SELF (Self Empowerment Long-term Fund) has increased by $200,000+ over 5 years in 7 days.

That is a performance that ANY community can be proud of, especially when the fundraising was done on the website, without any overhead cost.  80-20 SALUTES YOU!

For those who have NOT donated to SELF, please, PLEASE consider helping us now.  Let's accomplish the remaining 1/5 of our goal quickly.
We NEED either 50 individuals to each give $100/yr for 5 yrs, or 5 persons to each give $1,000/yr for 5 yrs, or 1 person to donate $5,000/yr for 5 yrs to reach the $350,000 CHALLENGE!

May I count on you to donor today?  Help keep 80-20 alive. Please DONATE by clicking here. THANK YOU.

Best critique of race based admission policy

We quote only 370 words from STANFORD MAGAZINE:

THE CASE AGAINST RACE BASED AFFIRMATIVE ACTION
By David Sacks & Peter Thiel

Over the past quarter of a century, Stanford has been discriminating in favor of racial minorities in admissions, hiring, tenure, contracting and financial aid. But only recently has the University been forced to rethink these policies in the face of an emerging public debate over affirmative action.

We are beginning to see why. Originally conceived as a means to redress discrimination, racial preferences have instead promoted it. And rather than fostering harmony and integration, preferences have divided the campus. In no other area of public life is there a greater disparity between the rhetoric of preferences and the reality.

 Take, for instance,
the claim that racial preferences help the "disadvantaged." In reality, as the Hoover Institution's Thomas Sowell has observed, preferences primarily benefit minority applicants from middle- and upper-class backgrounds. At the same time, because admissions are a zero-sum game, preferences hurt poor whites and even many Asians (who meet admissions standards in disproportionate numbers). If preferences were truly meant to remedy disadvantage, they would be given on the basis of disadvantage, not on the basis of race.

Another myth is that preferences simply give minority applicants a small "plus." In reality, the average SAT disparity between Stanford's African-American and white admittees reached 171 points in 1992, according to data compiled by the Consortium on Financing Higher Education and cited in Richard Herrnstein and Charles Murray's book, The Bell Curve.

The fundamental unfairness and arbitrariness of preferences -- why should the under-qualified son of a black doctor displace the qualified daughter of a Vietnamese boat refugee? -- has led supporters to shift rationales in recent years. Instead of a remedy for disadvantage, many supporters now claim that preferences promote "diversity." This same push for "diversity" also has led Stanford to create racially segregated dormitories, racially segregated freshman orientation programs, racially segregated graduation ceremonies and curricular requirements in race theory and gender studies.

But if "diversity" were really the goal,
then preferences would be given on the basis of unusual characteristics, not on the basis of race. The underlying assumption -- that only minorities can add certain ideas or perspectives -- is offensive not merely because it is untrue but also because it implies that all minorities think a certain way. . . . .

Exciting! Half way to our GOAL

Thanks to you, we are half way to our GOAL -- getting to $350,000/yr for 5 years!

In 6 days since Woo's Foundation (WF) promised to match your donation, we've marched briskly to $324,400/yr for 5 yrs.  Thanks to the 85 great individuals whose donations ranged from a $20 lump sum donation (i.e. $4/yr for 5 years) to a $1,500/yr for 5 years from Xiaomei Song of Mercer Island, WA.

Quadruple your donation by asking your company to match your donation first.  WF will then again match what you and your company are giving, thereby quadrupling your donation.  Click here to see the  23 large corporations which already match their employee's donations to 80-20.

Large or small in dollar amounts, quadrupling or just doubling your donation, please DONATE to Self Empowerment Long-term Fund by clicking below

to help reach the  $350,000/yr for 5 years by 9/30/2014 goal.

After reaching it, an election of the Board of Donors will be held among donors.  To see the importance of this Board, click here.  Self nomination to run for a Board seat is encouraged!   We need candidates who are dedicated and willing to devote time to Board duties.  Serve the Asian Am. community!

Please help reach our goal, preferably by next Monday!

The best way to protect ourselves politically

Q: What is the best way for Asian Ams to politically protect ourselves?
A: Give (1) lip service (2) small donations.

Q: Give "lip service and small donation" to whom?
A: To organizations which are true in their hearts and effective in helping AsAms.  That way, you'll get big return from a tiny investment.

Q: Why would lip service work?
A: In a one-person-one-vote democracy, an organization that can deliver a lot of votes has political clout.  If 1/10 of the 18 million Asian Ams think that 80-20 is a good organization, and give it lip service i.e. praises in social networks, conversations with elected officials, and in prints,it'll mean 1.8 million AsAms occasionally praise 80-20 -- lip service.
However, the result will be significant.  Politicians will therefore know that 80-20 is probably capable of delivering votes.  That awareness gives 80-20 the political clout to serve YOU.

Q: Why will making "small donations" work help?  What is small?
A:  0.1% of your annual income is small.  Invest that in politics.  If you invest in an organization like 80-20, you'll get a HUGE return from it.

Let me illustrate.  There are a million plus AsAm families with an annual income of $100,000, according to national statistics.  If 1/10 of them will choose to give 80-20 $100/yr for 5 years, it'll be  ($100/family X 1,000,000 families x 1/10) = $10 million per year for 5 years.

80-20's current budget is $100,000.  IMAGINE, if 80-20 has a $10 million annual budget!  Will you still face the lowest glass ceiling in workplaces?  Will your children still face the highest huddles in college admissions?  Will people like Beckel still dare to demonize us?

Q: Giving lip service & small donations makes good sense!  Why aren't we
     doing them?
A:  Why aren't we?  :-)

                Act!!! Give Small Donation NOW!

80-20's SELF must raise $1 million/yr for 5 yrs, since S.B. Woo retires in 2016.  Otherwise, 80-20 will likely demise. If 80-20 can't raise $350,000 in the first 11 months of its 2-year campaign, how likely will it raise $1 million/yr for 5 yrs. at the end of 2 years?  NOT likely.

To try harder, S.B. Woo induced Woo's Foundation to give a $125,000 over 5 years grant to create a CHALLENGE bid.   Donation to SELF from $300,000 to reach $350,000 by 9/30/2014 will be matched*.  SELF is currently at the $311,500 level.

We still NEED either 192 individuals to each give $100/yr for 5 yrs, or 19 persons to each give $1,000/yr for 5 yrs, or person to donate $19,200/yr for 5 yrs to reach the $350,000 CHALLENGE!  Help keep 80-20 alive.

Pls DONATE by clicking here.  Only 16 days left for the matching*.  See Footnote 1 for how to quadruple your donation.

S.B. Woo, a volunteer
President, 80-20 National Asian Am. Educational Foundation, Inc.

Footnote 1:
(1) Get matching from your company. See the names of 23 large Am. Corporations that gift-match donation to 80-20 Educational Foundation. (2) Woo's Foundation will match both, and therefore (3) You donation will be 4 times more effective.   80-20 EF's Employer I.D. : 20-2391770 and Public Charity Status: 509 (a) (2).

* If the goal of $350,000 is not reached by mid-night 9/30/2014, there will be no matching.  However, the grant will NOT be withdrawn.  It'll remain with SELF for a future challenge bid.    Go DONATE .

Raised $250,000 for SELF in 2 Days

Q: What is SELF?
A: SELF stands for Self Empowerment Long-term Fund.  In 10 months, it has raised $1.5 million, pledged over 5 years.  But it is not enough.

Q:  Why is SELF needed?
A:  To keep 80-20 alive, after S. B. Woo retires in 2016.  He works for 80-20 for free.  After he retires, 80-20 needs to find good people to replace him.  Good people don't normally work for an organization without a solid financial base and an adequate annual budget.  The current annual budget for 80-20 is $100,000.  In comparison, that of AIPAC, the Jewish political powerhouse, is $67 million.

Q:  How much does SELF need to raise?
A:  A minimum of $1 million per year for 5 years, to be raised in 2 years.  If the goal is NOT met, 80-20 will likely demise, and all donation will be refunded in full.  Not a penny of the raised fund has been spent.

Q: OK, now that I know what is SELF & its goal, tell me how you raised the $250,000 in 2 days?
A:  80-20's last e-newsletter entitled "Collectively, we failed our children on Beckel" obviously has resonated with the hearts of Asian Ams.  An anonymous donordonated an additional $120,000!

To see that, click on Acknowledgement Page.
8 others donated another $3,975.  As a result, SELF has finally raised $300,363 per year for 5 years, reaching 1/3 of our goal.  In addition, 80-20just got a $125,000 grant yesterday.  More on that later.

Q: SELF has existed for 10 months.  Is SELF way behind schedule?
A: Yes.  We should have raised $445,000 per year for 5 years by now.

Q:  So is 80-20 quitting?
A:  No.  80-20 has always tried even harder when facing failure!   80-20 has just acquired a grant commitment of $125,000 over 5 years or $25,000 per year for 5 year from Woo's Foundation.  The money will be used to put up a CHALLENGE FUND

DONATION between now and midnight of 9/30/14 will  be MATCHED by that grant, provided that SELF climbs to $350,000/yr for 5 years by that time*.

Kindly please match & exceed our determination.  Do your share to improve our destiny.   Click here to DONATE to SELF to keep 80-20 alive.

WE NEED 250 individuals each donating $100/yr for 5 years, or 25 persons, each donating $1,000 per year for 5 year, or 1 person to donate $125,000, which when coupled with the matching fund will get us to $350,000 per year for 5 years!!!  When that goal is reached, there will be an election of a  Board of Donors.
Only donors may vote and serve on the Board.  Self nomination is accepted.
DONATE  please!

SB Woo, a volunteer
President, 80-20 National Asian Am. Educational Foundation, Inc.

* If the goal of $350,000 is not reached by mid-night 9/30/2014, there will be no matching.  However, the grant will NOT be withdrawn.  It'll remain with SELF for a future challenge bid.    Go donate to SELF now.  Together, we can do it.  Click on  http://admin.80-20nj.info/cgi/80/e?l=8/au/1/f&w=no
