Empowering ourselves & where YOU come in

ALL OF US WISH that we could have the kind of political clout that the Jewish American community has.   Will wishing get us there?
STOP WISHING.  START DOING - step by painstaking steps!   Will you consider pitching in please?
                       Money Talks
The Jewish community has a fabled political organization entitled The American Israel Public Affairs Committee, AIPAC.  To serve the 6 million Jewish Americans, its annual budget was a whopping $67 million 4 years ago.
80-20 Initiative has established an 80-20 PAC and a 501 c-3 org., 80-20 Educational Foundation.   Together, they function like the Jewish AIPAC.  However, to serve the 16 million AsAms, PAC has an annual budget of $0.1 million, and EF has an annual budget of about $0.18 million.
Are we discouraged by the lopsided comparison?  Not at all.  We believe in empowering ourselves, step by painstaking steps.
4 years ago, EF started SELF  (Self Empowerment Long-term Fund).  Today SELF has grown to $2.6 million - a historic feat.  Click here to verify. See the "Total Donations Received" line.  Scroll down on that page to see those names shown in a pink background. They are model-donors who completed their 5-yr pledges in 4 years.  For our future generations!
Are AsAm Rich Folks Doing their Share to Help?
NO.  They are too "smart" to do their share.  They would rather give money to  "Harvard" to get a building named after them.  What a shame.  "Charity starts at home."  The AsAm rich folks need to do their share to help us win equal opportunity.  80-20 always tells it like it is. If no others will point it out, 80-20 will.  Why is 80-20 making them mad?  Quite to the contrary, in the long run, our rich folks & their children will thank us for jolting their community consciousness -- another of the painstaking steps we must take.
                        Leadership Counts
   Money Talks.  Additionally, leadership counts.
80-20 EF's Board recently added two new members - again, step by painstaking  steps. They are doctors Andrew Lam & Larry Shen
Their DISTINGUISHED  bios are shown as footnotes below.
Your Support Counts Even More.
Only an estimated 15,000 AsAms have ever helped 80-20 with money and/or time.  The rest of the 16 million AsAms have not lifted a finger to help.
If you belong to that group, help today!  Why?  Because you are actually empowering YOURSELF & YOUR CHILDREN to win equal opportunity.  There are so many ways to help.  Act today!  :-)

Princeton Univ's Words vs Deeds

Words without Deeds Never to Heaven Go
                WordsTransparency, Transparency!
If an individual is fortunate enough to speak to the president of Princeton University, and ask the following question: "I've not done anything wrong. What can I do to gain public trust?"
These words will likely thunder down from the mouth of the august president: "Transparency.  Transparency. Transparency."
Deeds: Princeton Suing to block release of admissions records
But will the president walk the talk?  When the Dept. of Education decided to release documents, submitted by Princeton in its defense against a suit filed by SFFA (Students for Fair Admissions) for discriminatory admissions practices against Asian American students, Princeton opposed.  See the news reported by Politicos 3 days go:
Please note that DOE is only releasing documents that have been redacted of any "personally identifiable information" about individual applicants.
                  Words Without Deeds
Paraphrasing King Claudius of Hamlet, who mused to himself after praying:
My words fly up, my deeds remain below:
Words without deeds never to heaven go.
Does Princeton Univ. Have  A Better Option?
Ivy League colleges have adopted a "merits-be-damned" approach to limit the number of Asian students since about 1990.  See the powerful graph below, presented by Ron Unz's "The Myth of American Meritocracy":
The above figure caption states: "Trends of Asian enrollment at Caltech and the Ivy League universities, compared with growth of Asian College age population.  Asian age cohorts population figures are based on Census CPS, and given the small sample size, are subject to considerable yearly statistical fluctuations."
Today, America's core value of equal opportunity and the 14th Amendment on equal protection are being trampled upon. The credibility of Ivy League colleges suffers. The colleges can no longer walk the talk of the noble principles they expound. As the truth emerges, students and scholars shake their heads and chuckle at the false facade put up by Ivy League schools.
Princeton's president is Christopher L. Eisgruber, a renowned constitutional scholar.   Does President Eisgruber truly think that there is no discrimination under an affirmative admissions policy, where upon AsAms applicants, on average, are forced to yield 140 SAT points to White peers in order to gain equal access?
Please forward this e-newsletter to anyone who is associated with Princeton University.  Thank you.

80-20 EF Mission Statement

Monday, March 6, 2017

80-20 donated $10,000 to SFFA, Here's Why.

Helping SFFA (Students For Fair Admissions) with $10k
Our $10,000 to SFFA. Why Wishing to Do Much More?
80-20 EF donated $10,000 to SFFA in addition to the $5,000 donated last year.  We wish we could do much more.  Why?
Why SFFA (Students for Fair Admissions)?
SFFA is, in EF's view, likely the organization that will finally lift the yoke of unfair admissions policy from the shoulders of OUR best high school graduates.   It is a nonprofit membership group ($10 when you first join) of more than 20,000 students, parents, and others who believe that racial preferences in college admissions are unfair & unconstitutional.  The membership list is confidential, although my wife & I are proud to publicize our participations.  To join SFFA, click here .   Do Your share.
                                     Progress!
(1) Harvard has been ordered by the court to release 6 years of admissions records to SFFA, and
(2) SFFA will depose (take evidence fromHarvard Pres. Drew Faust soon.
                            SFFA and Mr. Ed Blum
Where did the millions of dollars in legal fees come from?  From Gerald and Ronnie Chan who donated $350 million, or Elaine Chao's family  who donated $40 million to Harvard???  Did they have a change of conscience and decided to help AsAm youths get a legal hearing if they have been treated UN-fairly in admissions?  NO.  Not yet anyway.
Mr. ED Blum has helped raise it to give AsAm youths a chance for equal opportunity.

The Legal Positions of SFFA and 80-20 EF are Not Identical
SFFA's Position:  "the outright prohibition of racial preferences in university admissions-period."  It further alleges that Harvard and U. of NC hold an illegal quota on Asian-American applicants.
80-20's Position:  We embrace diversity.  However, 80-20 strongly protest the discriminatory practice which forces AsAm applicants to yield 140 SAT points to white applicants in order to gain equal access. 80-20 EF has estimated that AsAm applicants lose most of the admissions to whites, not Hispanics or blacks. The game that Harvard plays is revolting.
We Wish We Could Do More for SFFA
Two components of the AsAm community are financially quite well off. Are the rich individuals in the Chinese-Am and/or Indian-Am communities climbing over each other to finance legal battles on behalf of our youths?  Are all of us joining SFFA to finance its legal fees?  Are all of us joining EF's petition for $10 each to finance its potential lawsuit for our youths?  Not yet.  But it is never to late.  Join SFFA and/or 80-20's Petition!   DO IT NOW.

80-20 EF Mission Statement

80-20 and YOU

80-20 Educational Foundation (EF), 80-20 PAC  & You
Q1:  In terms of SERVICE to YOU, how are 80-20 PAC & 80-20 EF different?
A:   PAC has teeth.  For example, when two AsAm politicians in CA, a state Senator and an Assemblyman, betrayed our community's interest in the anti-SCA-5 campaign in CA in 2015, 80-20 PAC declared the day after defeating SCA-5, to drive them out of politics. Click Q3 part 2 to verify.  Both were out of politics within a few months.  Click Q3 to verify.   Result?   When PAC speaks out to protect your rightful interests, politicians, including presidential candidates, listen.
PAC also knows how to say thank you.  In 2008, when presidential candidate Obama answered PAC's questionnaire with 6 yeses, we rewarded him with a bloc vote of 68 to 31*.  In 2012, when Pres. Obama had fulfilled most of his promises to AsAms (1 and 2), PAC rewarded him with a 73 to 26 bloc vote *.
EF does political research and education.  It is NOT allowed to take political actions. However, the research and educational work it does are absolutely necessary to enable 80-20 PAC to take effective political actions such as those described in the 1st paragraph.  For example, this e-newsletter was sent by EF to help you understand how 80-20 helps you.
Q2:  In terms of making DONATION to 80-20, how are PAC and EF different?
A:    PAC is NOT not a 501 c-3.
EF is.  So your donation to EF is tax deductible, saving you money.

Q3:  Why am I still receiving reminders to join PAC?  I've donated to SELF (Self Empowerment Long-term Fund) and other 80-20 causes already.

A:  EF and PAC are SEPARATE organizations, sharing the same goals, but required by law to use different methodology.
EF may do political education only.  It raises money through SELF and the petition, but it may NOT transfer its money to PAC for political actions. PAC may use all means to affect politics, including the taking of actions to reward or punish politicians.   Its primary source of financial income is through membership dues.

Q4:  What do I gain by being a PAC  member?

A:    You gain a share of the control over 80-20 PAC. The entire PAC membership is the top boss of 80-20 PAC.  Bylaw amendments must get the approval of a majority of the membership.   Officers & board members must be elected by members. Additionally, as a member you can run for an officer and/or board position.
Philosophically, your biggest gain is the satisfaction you receive that you are paying YOUR SHARE to help make our community politically stronger.

REMINDER:  S. B. Woo has stepped down from the presidency of 80-20 PAC, although he is still the president of 80-20 Educational Foundation.

EF MORE Good news created by YOU

You Helped Cause These Developments
If YOU didn't help 80-20, would an UNIQUE and middle-of-the-road AsAm view on college admissions still have developed and spread like this?
                          The Credit Goes to YOU
Look at the time sequence of how this UNIQUE and independent AsAm view on college admissions had spread.  It originated with your support to create a financially independent 80-20.
(1) On 8/1/2016, 80-20 EF took this unique & Middle-of-the-road position: We would embrace diversity, but oppose strongly the discriminatory practice by elite colleges, which force AsAm applicants to yield 140 SAT points to white applicants.
To spread the idea, EF started  a petition.
(2) On 9/14/2016, Harvard's own campus paper, Harvard Crimson, published an editorial to advocate this brand new idea.
(3) On 1/30/2017, The NY Times published an Op Ed supporting the same concept.  The title is  White Students' Unfair Advantage in Admissions.
                            New Postive Development
(4)  On 1/31/2017, one day after the NY Times article, Frank H. Wu, former Chancellor and Dean of UC, Hastings College of the Law and Chair, Committee of 100, published in Huffington Post
He supports the 80-20 position as the following except makes clear:
"Now, the real problem has become clear. Asian Americans might be against "preferences." What we should understand, however, is that the vast bulk of such preferences operate to benefit whites over Asian Americans, not African Americans and Hispanics."
Being a law professor, he also stated his legal objection to asking AsAm applicants to yield 140 SAT pts to their white peers.
"There is no good basis for saying that whites were discriminated against by Asian Americans historically, such that a remedy is necessary; or that they suffer some disadvantage vis-a-vis Asian Americans today, such that mitigation is needed."
                     To Cause More Positive Changes
Shamefully, most AsAm "civil rights" orgs. supported "race -preference" admissions, then and now; in their press releases and in legal actions. Want to write to such organizations and ask them to reconsider their positions? Grassroots pressure is the most influential persuasion, although most of these orgs obtain an overwhelming % of their funding from outside of our community.  Money talks.

                      80-20's Petition
This was the petition that started all of the positive development.
      So join 80-20's petition now!
We need 100,000 signers in another 1.5 years to demonstrate the united support of our community for this unique and seeking the middle ground proposal for college admissions.   Otherwise, the $10 per petitioner donation will be returned.   Note:  My wife and I each donated $250 to this petition.

80-20 EF Mission Statement

Do you know the 2016 election (final segment)?

Worrisome Implications for US Democracy
                            Are You Worried?
1) In 2016, all presidential campaigns were OPAQUE to American voters. An ordinary citizen would not have been able to find a phone or fax number, or an email address, or a website to make a suggestion to a campaign. Even donors and volunteers for future events could not find a way to make suggestion.  In 2008, citizen voices were still eagerly sought.  Why the drastic change?  Implications?
2) The near unanimity of the media endorsements plus the recommendation of the top political leaders of BOTH parties, failed to elect Hillary ClintonIs there any institution that the American voters still respect? On the other hand, one could see a silver lining from the above -- America is still a young nation capable of changing its course dramatically.
3)  Although the election is over, the partisan fever has risen higher among some Democratic voters.  Everyone hates the political gridlock in D.C. However, are we aware that the ULTIMATE reason for the political gridlock in D.C. is the partisan fever of voters like you and me?
Defects that have always existed in Our Presidential Elections
a) Requiring way too much $$$$$.  The combined campaign cost was $(1.4 + 0.9) billion.  Implications?
b)  Candidates either expected us to be too sophisticated to believe in their campaign rhetoric, or too dumb to know that we're being fooled, or too cynical to care. [Note: Some of us might take on all 3 of the above characteristics when it came to defending our favorite candidate.]
                  - - - - This "2016 election" series ENDS.- - - -
                                   Continued Good News
Andrew Lam, the author of NY Time's Op Ed,White Students' Unfair Advantage in Admissionsemailed me:
    "Dear Dr. Woo,
. . . . I just wanted to introduce myself and ask you to put me back on your newsletter email list. I respect everything you've done to advance the cause of Asian Americans.     Andrew"
Andrew is a summa cum laude graduate of Yale, an M.D. who is a distinguished retinal surgeon, and the author of two books:
"Saving Sight",  an Amazon.com best seller, and
"Two Sons of China", which is based on a true story in China during WWII.  It won the Best Book Award from the Chinese American Librarians                     Association a couple years ago and some other awards.  I bought a copy.  :-)
He just joined 80-20's petition.  Won't YOU join the petition too?
                 The Petition is Actually Failing!
Although the petition presents a thoughtful, unique, middle-of-the-road solution to college admissions, it is failing.  Click here to see that it has only about 2,000 petitioners thus far, including that of Andrew Lam.  It must get 50 times more signers in 1.5 years or fail.  Why is it failing?  Because many of us don't care enough about our own rights and those of our children.
Won't YOU join the petition?  Your $10 donation will be returned to you, if the petition fails to reach 100,000 petitioners in another 1.5 years.
