War Story 5 - Fighting for our children
Background Info: The college admissions issue can only be
settled in 2 courts - the courts of law and the court of public opinion.
Bringing cases to federal courts requires a huge amount of time and
millions of dollars. 80-20 doesn't have that kind of money. So we
had to leverage the bigger power in order to win in the courts of law. We depend on Mr. Ed Blum and
his organization "Students for Fair Admissions", SFFA, to fight for our
rights.
80-20
helps Blum to recruit exceptional students as plaintiffs. We also gave token
financial assistance, totaling $15,000 thus far, and hopefully adding $10,000
per year henceforth.
80-20 EF
is probably the best AsAm org. helping our children to win in the court of public opinion by sending these e-newsletters and
urging YOU to forward.
The Issue: Princeton Sociologist Espenshade et al reported that to gain equal
access to elite universities, AsAm applicants need to yield 140 SAT pts. to
white applicants and 270 pts. and 450 pts. respectively to Hispanic
and black applicants, when all other qualifications are equal.
80-20 is
outraged that AsAm applicants, being minorities,
need to yield 140 SAT pts to white
peers in a so called "affirmative action program"!
Result: The Vise Is Tightening
The
"Fisher vs. U of TX" I and II court cases, both initiated by
Blum, reached the Supreme Court. Those two cases were not outright
victories for us, but they have provided the basis for us to tighten the
vise on those who discriminate against us. Our successes thus far include:
(1) Harvard and Princeton being forced by
courts to hand over many years of admissions records to Blum's group, and
(2) SFFA lawyers taking the deposition of
Harvard president Drew Faust.
Don't forget our own Shame: Our community can't be proud of ourselves in this fight.
We are not poor. But we don't have the UNITY and "charity
begins at home" spirit to get our assets together to fight a good fight
for our children.
Many of us have even worked against our youngsters' interest. Wealthy individuals like Gerald Chan and Elaine Chao chose to donate respectively $350 million and $40 million to Harvard, which invented "holistic evaluation" for its admissions process to limit the number of AsAm students on its campus. Harvard had done it before to suppress the number of Jewish students. Click 1 (80-20's Amicus brief to the Supreme Court) and 2 (Daniel Golden's book) to see a huge amount of evidence. What did the Chan and Chao families get back in return? A Harvard building was named after each family. History will decide whether the naming of the buildings honors or shames the ancestors of the respective families.
