Background Information:

(1) Within the last 3 months, the top leadership (Chancellors, Presidents
together with Provosts) of 4 top universities each issued a campus-wide
communication to protect innocent international scientists, including
Chinese & Chinese-Am researchers. The institutions are U.C. Berkeley,
Stanford, the Univ. of Michigan and U.C. Davis
. To read the respective
statements, click on (1), (2), (3) and (4).

(2) Why are these leaders sending out such statements? There are good but very complicated reasons, which if not discussed properly and in detail, will lead only to counter productive results. So Iearning from the above wise leaders, I'll skip that part of the discussion too.

(3) 80-20 EF, knowing politics, saw a much larger potential positive impact from the above 4 statements that should be developed to protect the innocent STEM workers of Chinese descent. Therefore, on May 6, 2019 it issued "CALL TO ACTION - protecting innocent Ch-Am scientists".

The CALL TO ACTION Spread Quickly

(a) On May 10, 2019 President Dennis Assanis and Provost Robin Morgan of the Univ. of Delware responded by sending out a similar campus-wide communication urging the protection of innocent STEM workers of Chinese origin. We thank Xiao-Hai Yan, Mary A. S. Lighthipe Chair Professor of Marine Studies, Univ. of DE, and his colleagues for leading the UD effort to issue the campus community statement.

(b) On May 17, 2019 President Leebron of Rice University send an email to the Board of Houston Chinese Faculty Association. EF doesn't know who were the heroes &/or heroines behind the scenes.

(c) On May 23, 2019, Yale President Salovey issued a thoughtful statement addressing the issue of

"tensions in United States-China relations and increased scrutiny of academic exchanges have added to a sense of unease among many international students and scholars here at Yale and at universities across the country."

We thank Lin, Haifan, Eugene Higgins Professor of Cell Biology, and Professor of Genetics and of Obstetrics, Gynecology, and Reproductive Sciences; Director, Yale Stem Cell Center and his colleagues for spearheading this effort.

(d) Many more universities are in the process of responding. If you are a senior professor
on your campus and you have NOT started working with other Ch-Am colleagues to induce a similar statement from your campus leaders yet, act today. Otherwise, you may be remembered as the Chaired professor who has no compassion and/or leadership.

80-20 SuperPAC Is Formed

Woo Has an Offensive Political Tool to Serve You Again

An 80-20 SuperPAC, SPAC, with S. B. Woo as its president and Jing-Li Yu as its Treasurer, has been established.  Other Board Members of the 80-20 SuperPAC are Alice Huang, Henry Lee, Elaine Su, and Wei-jing Zhu.  Stephen Lin serves as a staff to the SPAC.

Don't mix up the newly formed SPAC with 80-20 Educational Foundation, EF, from which you have received numerous e-newsletters in the past.  While the board memberships are identical, the two are very different legal entities.  What YOU need to know is that, EF SPAC play complementary roles to help make YOU equal citizens ASAP.

EF is a 501 c-3 organization.   Donations to EF are tax deductible.  However, EF may not endorse or oppose a political candidate.  It is basically a defensive political tool.  EF was instrumental in protecting Ch-Ams who might have participated in any of China's talent and recruitment programs.  It also led to protect Ch-Am organizations accused by the Hoover Institute Report as possibly damaging America's interests.  Indeed, EF is currently leading a campaign to protect innocent Ch-Am STEM workers who are caught in the crossfire of a worsening U.S.-China relationship.

SPAC may actively endorse or oppose candidates in the Presidential &/or other elections. However, donations to the SPAC are not tax deductible.  SPAC is basically an offensive political tool to be used to ADVANCE AsAm interests.  For example, candidate Obama answered, in writing, "yes" to Woo's request to greatly increase the number of AsAm federal judges, because Obama urgently needed our endorsement and vote. Upon being the president, President Obama increased the number of AsAm federal judges by 300% in his first 6 years.  See below.

PS: There may still be an 80-20 PAC, whose president is Joel Wang.  It is NOT the same as 80-20 SPAC which is headed by S. B. Woo.  EF & Woo are disappointed by 80-20 PAC's lack of performance.  That is why a SPAC was established.

    U. of DE Pres. & Provost Issued A Campus-wide Notice, Responding positively to A Request by its own Faculty

Agreeing with the wisdom in the statements issued by the leaders of UC BerkeleyStanfordU. of MI, and UC DavisPres. Dennis Assanis and Provost Robin Morgan of the Univ. of Delaware issued a similar campus-wide communication 3 days ago, shown below.  To read the complete statement, click here.  Among other words, they stated,
"... Unfortunately, members of our nation's international community sometimes may feel vulnerable or unwelcome, caught in the political crossfire among nations. Recently, concerns have been voiced at UD and other institutions regarding rhetoric and actions targeting certain international community members, such as Chinese or Chinese-American scholars. What's more, faculty and students here and elsewhere have been subject to prejudicial comments, unwarranted scrutiny or professional strictures based on their race, ethnicity or national origin. Therefore, it is essential that we at the University of Delaware reaffirm our unwavering support for our international students, faculty, staff and visitors, as well as the vital partnerships and initiatives that enable their work. ...."

A statement like this reaffirms, & calms its worried innocent scientists.  It possibly deters not only the centrifugal force tugging at the international scholars at this moment but also increases the competitiveness of the institution for international talents in the future.

                            What Are You Waiting For?

Get your own University to Issue a Similar Statement! Do Your Share. Don't Be a Freeloader.

Here are the steps that gave birth to the significant statement from the U. of DE. YOU can take similar steps.

1)  Professor Xiao-Hai Yan, Mary A. S. Lighthipe Chair Professor of Marine
issued by 80-20 EF last Monday.  He thought it would be a wonderful way
for Ch-Am scientists to protect themselves locally and nationally.  In
one day, he got the support of 16 UD Ch-Am professors in alphabetical
     order,10 of them Chaired professors.
2) 2 days later, they sent an email to the President & the Provost, using the           template provided by EF's "Call-to-action created a BIG MO;a template".
3) President Dennis Assanis & Provost Robin Morgan responded positively to their request & issued a campus-wide communication 3 days later.

A lesser leadership team might be using excuses like consulting law firms and/or waiting for the next Board of Trustees meeting to move the issue to delay things. Not this UD team!  They understood the pain of innocent scientists caught in the cross-fire of international politics and stepped up decisively to provide relief.

We salute the entire Univ. of Delaware community for leadership displayed in the ranks of the faculty and the administrators in this matter.

FROM THE GRAPEVINE:   We heard that As-Am faculty members at Yale, Duke, Cal Tech and many other universities are approaching their respective campus leadership for a similar statement.
