A lot of AsAm parents still don't really understand the college admissions issue.

AsAm parents are willing to spend tens of thousands of $$$, deprive our kid's childhood leisure time by hundreds of hours to increase their SAT score by 100+ SAT points. HOWEVER, the same parents are NOT willing to spend 15 minutes to read this e-newsletter to understand the issue and achieve the same goal -- getting our kids into Harvard by winning equal educational opportunity rather than spending $$$ and depriving our kid of necessary leisure time. So FORWARD this e-newsletter to millions of such parents.

Q: S. B., what more do you want from Harvard? We are 6% of nation's population occupying 19 % of Harvard's seats! So the only realistic way for my kids to get into Harvard is for them to score even higher on the SAT in order to beat out all other high-scoring AsAm kids.

A: Look friends. The Jewish are only 2% of our population, occupying 25% of Harvard's seats. Harvard knows these facts, because Jewish orgs. like Hillel International and The Jerusalem Post annually research and publish such statistics. What is the difference between Jews and us? Jews are willing to donate to their political orgs. like AIPAC, which fights for them, and they are united towards the outside.

Q: S. B., aren't you ashamed of being used by Ed Blum in this Harvard lawsuit? Blum is using AsAms and you to destroy affirmative action, AA.

A:   There are 3 major components to Affirmative Action.  It has the govern-ment contracts component, the hiring/employment component, and the school/college admissions component.   We are not opposed to any of the 3. Our lawsuit against Harvard is only opposed to the up-side-down way that Harvard applies AA to AsAm applicants.  As we all know AA says,"for historical reasons, whites are to give minority college applicants an advantage."  But Harvard compels AsAm applicants to give an advantage to their white peers by 140 SAT points!   Don't let Harvard pull the wools over your eyes.  Ou target is not AA, but Harvard's discrimination against our children.

Q: S.B., why are you focused on whites, who have only a 140 pts of advan- tage over us. You are dishonest. You should focus on the advantages received by Hispanics and blacks who respectively receive 370 and 450 SAT pts of advantages.

A:     Look at the diagram below.  It roughly describes the relative sizes of applicants to Harvard (whites the largest) and their respective SAT scores.

If you move the peak of the green curve to the right by 450 SAT pts, only a small portion of green curve penetrates the red vertical line. If you move the peak of the black curve to the right by 140 pts, a huge portion will penetrate the red line, i.e. a lot of white students will be admitted. Since seats are limited, many AsAm students will be squeezed out consequently.

Many activists among recent immigrants are good persons. But they don't understand the complicated issues yet. Furthermore, their language ability often prevents them from understanding the discussions fully. So support them, but always get your information on complex issues from 80-20 EF. OK? :-)

We are looking for students, who have been wrongly rejected by Harvard in earlier years, to speak out at a rally in Boston on 10-14.  Harvard probably
bets that such students, being of low personality, don't have the guts.  I bet differently.   Former "rejects" with courage pls.contact me: sbw@udel.edu.
We'll pay your travel expenses.

Why is this case so important?  It is the most deviouspremeditated
systemic discrimination against AsAms known to 80-20 EF.  We must beat it
down.

Highlights of Actions in Chronological Order
The highlights, shown below, involve actions by 4 entities:
Students for Fair Admissions (SFFA),                        Harvard
the Department of Education (DoED), and the Department of Justice (DOJ).

o   Nov. 2014: Students for Fair Admissions, SFFA, headed by Ed Blum, filed a lawsuit alleging that Harvard violated Title VI of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 for considering race in admissions. The lawsuit focuses on discrimination against Asian Ams (AsAms) and is filed at the federal District Court of Boston.

o    May 2015:  The lawsuit entered the discovery phase.  The major                       discoveries on the SFFA side, included but were not limited to:

         (a) "personal essays, comments from alumni interviewers, & summary
sheets containing comments from admissions officers" with student names
left in tact, rather than redacted, and

      (b) in 2013, Harvard buried an internal report from its own Office of
Institutional Research stating that Harvard's admissions methodology
may be discriminating against AsAm applicants.

        (c) Harvard evaluates its applicants by adding a secretive, un-scientific,
and completely subjective "personal rating" of each applicant, sometimes
sight unseen, and sometimes in strong contrast with the rating of its alumni
who have interviewed the same student. See the yellow bar in the graph
below. Harvard called it a "whole person evaluation". It is actually a whole
race evaluation - Asians are not as good as whites, blacks and Hispanics.
The following graph compares AsAms to whites.

o     April 7, 2018: DOJ sided with SFFA and called for the unsealing of Harvard's admissions data

o     June 15, 18: Both sides filed for "summary judgment" by the court. SFFA filed to find Harvard guilty; Harvard filed to dismiss the case. The Court has not decided yet.

o    June 29, 18:  DoED's Office of Civil Rights and DOJ sent a notice to all colleges      that the current administration preferred a race neutral admissions approach, as was the case under the Bush administration. It reversed the Obama                      administration's preference of using race as one criteria of admissions.

o    Aug. 30, 18:  DOJ sided with SFFA and argued against Harvard's move
for a summary judgment to dismiss SFFA's lawsuit against Harvard.

                                 What is Harvard's Defense?

Harvard really has no defense for its alleged discrimination against AsAms,
given the huge amount evidence against it. Harvard only stated that it didn't
discriminate, and its statistical experts didn't find evidence of discrimination
against AsAm applicants.

Instead, it focuses its attacks on Ed Blum, the president of SFFA, a person whom Harvard attacked as the author of Fisher v. U of TX, and accused him of using AsAms as a tool to destroy affirmative action.  They also attacked him for his strong feeling that race should not be considered in any US laws.

Coming Actions - Demonstration & the TRIAL

o   Oct 14, 2018:  This is the day before the District Court of Boston will try the
case.  A DEMONSTRATION against Harvard is planned in Boston (exact
location to be announced).  Hundreds, perhaps thousands of AsAms from
across the nation will be there.  Join us, if you share our sense of
     obligation to our future generations.

I'll be there, and shall deliver a stinging, but hopefully fair-minded speech            against Harvard for its discrimination against our youngsters.  I always believe in stepping up and being counted.

We are looking for students, who have been wrongly rejected by Harvard in earlier years, to speak out during this occasion.  Harvard probably bets that such students, being of low personality, don't have the guts.  I bet differently.   Former "rejects" with courage pls.contact me:  sbw@udel.edu.  We'll pay your travel expenses.

o  Oct 15, 2018.   The trial begins.

Light At The End Of The Tunnel?

Regardless of which side will win this round, the case will likely end up at the Supreme Court in 2020.  Given very strong support for us in the "Court of Public Opinion", the strong support of DOJ and DoED against Harvard, and most crucially the change in composition of the Supreme Court Justices, we are quite optimistic about the eventual outcomeespecially if we win this round!
